I don't know whether anybody will be interested in this or not, but thought that I would post as it may help someone who is looking for a new external hard drive.

Ordered a Freecom 160gb usb external hard drive on Friday, £61 + £6 delivery. I was expecting it to be cheap and nasty but do the job since it had significantly more memory than the similar priced drives. It arrived this morning. (Bought via www.dabs.com) Very impressed with the speed of the delivery from them.

I got the drive out and was instantly impressed with how heavy it was, it felt like a quality piece of kit. It looks quite neat as well. It comes with all the required leads, unlike some of the HDDs I was looking at. It has a nice aluminium case, and a black plastic front, with a 160gb illuminated in blue, that flashes when the drive is being read.

It comes with 153gb of space and So far its been fantastic.

For anyone who is looking for more space I would definately recommend this to them.

Here are a few pics:

Apologies if I waste anyones time.

There is no mention of it having an external power supply on the Dabs site, is that correct, USB supply only?

No it has an external power supply included as well. Its very quite as well. And I mean silent. I think if you read the review on it or specificiation, some guy said that everything was included, thats how I found out anyway.

Formatting losses.. You will get that on absolutely any HD. The larger the drive, the bigger the loss.

nerd It's space reserved by the file system to store things like file attributes (directory structures) and file allocation (FAT tables, etc).

Also most HDD are quoted as 1,000,000,000 Bytes to a GB, whereas 99% of file systems format to 1,073,741,824 Bytes per GB.

Second vote for the freecom.
I use a NAT freecom HDD , via my wireless router.
Transfer can be a bit slow over the wireless but it can be accessed from all the PC's in the house.

got the 250gb model - very good, except the led stopped flashing soon after i bought it - the drive is fine so i couldn't be bothered with changing it.

Shit, just found that, its only an extra tenner for another 90gb. Ah well. I'm sure 160gb will keep me going for a while.
