Hi all

Thanks for your advice - i eventually went for the T mobile Vario with web and walk (unlimited) which comes to just £23+vat per month

Question is my internet speed is a leisurely 17 k bits/second.... Is this not a little slow for gprs?

About right for GPRS. Slow for R99 DCH calls, & very slow for HSDPA.

What phone, and do you actually have 3G coverage (is the little 3G symbol on)?

Problem solved, i phoned the t mob shop and they've agreed to cheaply upgrade me to HD whatever it's called which should be 4 times quicker. That's the vario II

HSDPA. It's not a new varient or service, just a refinement of the existing R99 specs (and some very clever coding and power control). Will mean a new (release 5) handset. Should be able to do about 1Mbit/sec on current commercial grade UEs.
Will make utterly all difference if you have no UMTS coverage, and from the data rate you're currently quoting I suspect you have not and are stuck on 2G (GSM/GPRS).

GPRS connection over GSM. The data rate you're seeing is actually pretty good for GPRS.

You are not seeing a 3G signal. You are not getting W-CDMA goodness. All the updated fancy release 5 phones in the world will not help.

What handset do you have currently?

clap Never thought I'd see someone write that in a PH forum.... welldone... it really is 'goodness' laugh I remember the first time I read about it and was almost overcome with admiration for the guys that thought it up... a very very clever technique indeed.

Erm. In that case you should probably know that UMTS (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) R&D has kept me in sports cars for the past 6 years or so. And it's bloody complicated at times, but streaming 6-7Mbit/sec to a UE is rather impressive to say the least.

Interesting, we are involved with Inmarsat and their latest and greatest BGAN system. It's basically 3GPP run over satellite, using the same core network. We've developed alot of test tools and wrote alot of dissectors for Ethereal so that we can decode all the air-interface protocools.

At the moment we're investigating IP Multicast, basically we get the Mobile Terminals to tune to a shared bearer and then join the multicast group. A great principal for delivering weather reports and the like to ships. It's all being tested in their labs at the moment using emutlated MT and TE equipment.

So if I get any more questions on the Non Access Stratum I can forward them to you? biglaugh

All good stuff.

Not the Vario II you mentioned earlier? Remember that the original Vario doesn't support 3G...

It doesn't support 3G? WTF?! No wonder i'm having trouble connecting to it then! Luckily i'm getting the vario II which should support it.

pmsl.

So the thread should be "Got my GPRS phone, speed check"

Rates look good for GPRS.
