Anyone got any bright ideas...? is there a way of protecting files on a CDrom so that they cant be copied ? They still need to be read by the application on the CD, but I'd like to make the files uncopyable if poss

Maybe there is, but conceptually you're asking the impossible. If the data can be 'read' then its been 'copied' somewhere else (e.g. into memory). At that point you lose control of the situation, so if the system that's read it wants to then write it somewhere else, you're buggered.

It only works with DRM systems when all the hardware and software involved agrees to abide by predefined rules.

You can copy protect a CD and there exist several schemes that can be applied. They are often used on games CD's and application needs to be aware of the copy scheme in use. Generally speaking its pretty much the same as in the late 80's with putting bad sectors on the disk/hidden files/files in specific sectors and the application checks for these.

It is however exceptionally easy to get around, hence games continued to be copied.

Also these schemes would have to be purchased from 3rd party companies and written to your master before sending the disk to the pressing plant, if your just sat infront of nero and a CD-Burner then I'm affraid there is little you can do.

You could encrypt the files on the cd so that only someone with the key could unlock them and make them available to an application.

If you then leave the cd somewhere you shouldn't, it doesn't matter; it is useless unless you know the key.

We did this for someone a few years ago, but at the moment i can't think what software we used for it. If i remember, i'll post again.

i'd theorise it uses a custom filesystem which needs a driver to understand it (similiar to how linux encrypts file systems).. so the data thats burnt onto disc is not understandable by any windows box unless it has the driver installed and the correct keys..

Most commercial copy protection schemes rely on the stamping manufacturing process to add protection, so out of the reach of most casual users.
