Spurred on by the lovely 24" Apple beasty shown in another thread, and the realisation that my desktop is a pile of poo, I'm thinking of treating myself to a new computer.

My quandry is, Mac or PC?

I like my PCs and have always got along with them fine. But then I've never so much as had a go on a Mac and I'm told they are superior to PCs in certain ways.

Two deals I've come across that I like the sound of are mentioned below:

or

So, which would you go for?

Personally I like the sound of that PC, but then everyone keeps raving about Macs.

Why not? rolleyes

I know a couple of people who have dual-monitor setups and I think they're fantastic. I suppose it would just be a bit of juvenile one-upmanship.

Plus £1,599 seems a great price for something like that. Admittedly I'm completely out of touch with computer prices but I remember paying £1,400 or thereabouts for a Pentium 133 with 64mb ram and a 14" monitor when I started college. Even my last desktop (P4 2.8ghz with 246mb and 15" tft) cost around a grand two or three years ago.

I was in the same boat as you last week. Decided on the 24" iMac as I fancy something different (and something new to learn) that does not need a re-build every 6 months and I'm into writing music and Macs are good for that!!

PC wins nearly everytime for me. Used to work for a Mac company and Apples internal politics on spares etc is worse than microsofts OS update policy IMO.

Macs do have their place though. If you have the cash get an old G3/G4 (not too much cash from fleabay etc) and have a play then make your mind up.

i used to be a PC diehard, always writing off the Mac without actually knowing anything about them.

After being introduced to a friends MacBook i am now hooked and looking to get one to replace my old PC tower system.

Everything about the Mac is just slicker and more involved. Plus they just look so much sexier than anything else. It can be hard to justify their seemingly higer costs but i have only heard good things about how well Macs last and as i'm only really looking for a leisure computer, the MacBook seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I'd go for the mac. Having said that depending on how heavy duty the work I wanted to do was I might not go for the imac and instead save up and get a full on Intel based Pro system with the large screen.

I run outlook on one, whatever develoment environment I'm using on another, and the output from that on a third. To be honest, I find that having two is miles better than having one, but having three is only a little bit better than having two.

Well I don't need three monitors, but I'm quite sure I'd use three monitors. It's just something nice to have isn't it? Like a car that goes faster than the speed limit, etc.

As mentioned though I might try and give an older Mac a go somewhere. Or failing that, I believe there's an Apple shop in Meadowhall now so I might go and have a play.

That PC is rather good value for the price. It will easily support Vista as well if you decide to upgrade.

You know it makes sense yes

Ahh but the Macs will run Vista and play games pretty well using BootCamp in to XP.
Mac's also tend to have a higher resale value and a longer upgrade cycle before becomming just too damn old to run anything modern. Both of which are worth considering when looking at the slightly higher price of them.

Good points but I question the longer life cycle now with the use of Intel processors.

I dont understand why people want to run a PC OS on a MAC though? I can understand that for business related stuff you then get the PC's functionality but other than that?

Has anyone ran vista using bootcamp yet? I wonder how it preforms on a MAC.

Vista shouldn't need bootcamp as supports the new form of BIOS that Mac's use (EFI?), Bootcamp is only really needed to get XP going; however how well Vista will play with OS X's boot loader remains to be seen.

Personally Mac's tend to offer very nice feature sets as standard (keyboard, screen are excellent, built-in web cam, etc.) so being able to run both OS's gives you a much greater range of software avaliable (i.e. games, PC specific software, etc.). Personally I'd just buy a Mac and decide 'bugger it' as far as games go but having the option of slapping XP/Vista on the machine and running anything that I must play is a nice benefit.

Some interesting comments. Forgive my ignorance, but is Vista the new version of Windows? When is that out then?

As for resale value I'm not hugely bothered. I tend to give my old computers to members of the family anyway once I've finished with them, as in my experience (admittedly, only of PCs) they're worth bugger all after a couple of years.

That PC just seems so overkill in terms of spec, which makes it all the more appealing. I mean, 1GB graphics card FFS! The most I imagine I'll ever do with it is perhaps play the odd game of Champ Manager (or whatever the hell it's called nowadays).

I can see the appeal of three monitors though as opposed to one larger one. A screen for PH (or whatever), a screen for any work I'm pretending to do and a screen for...well, something else hehe

I spec'd a Cube247 PC up with plenty of extras (memory card reader, better PSU, better sound, etc) and even with a three-year warranty the price was <£2k. A not-inconsiderable amount of money for sure, but still quite reasonably me thinks.

Vista will be Windows XP's replacement see the site, it looks fantastic.

One good thing about PC is because they are not tied down to one manufactorer pricing was always going to be competitive. The machine you are looking at should be future proof for at least 3 years.

If you want to use Windows and play some games, the PC is unbeatable but the MAC also has some advantages for other uses i.e. desk top publishing.

To be fair though, Gary did order himself a nice 24" Mac.

The Mac appeals in that I'm a total iPod fan, and I like the simplicity that they offer. A friend of my other half works for a media company and she absolutely swears by them. Think I'll have to get myself to an Apple shop and have a good play.

But as others have said, that PC system is awesome. I know my way round a PC fairly well so I won't have to learn anything new, and the overkill aspect would put a big smile on my face.
