Hi, I want to replace my aging 19" CRT with a 19" LCD or TFT monitor but don't really know where to start...

The makes/models available seem endless as do the various spec items of resolution, refresh rate, dot pitch, LCD vs TFT, DVI (?), contrast ratio etc etc

Basically the PC is for typical home use - web/e-mail/music/digi photo's etc, and my son uses for games (but not 'heavy-end' gaming - just football manager Sims etc).

An adjustable stand (certainly tilt anyway) would be good, but this doesn't seem to be one of the things the usual comparison sites offers - they seem to focus on the techie stuff.

I have about £150 to spend; here's one I've found which I thought looked okay (but I might be talking b*llox...)

Any comments or suggestions would be really welcome

Thanks in advance

I've just bought a 20" widescreen Phillips 200W6CS. 1680x1050, looks pretty damn good on both PC and Xbox360.

250 quid from Amazon.

Have been to local Currys today to see if that helped - what a joke ....

First had to navigate past three members of staff hanging round outside the front door on their fag break ... managed to get inside & find the monitors ... eventually found somebody to "advise me" ... but they weren't able to turn any of them on as they weren't connected to PC's, so I had no way of seeing them working. Technical advice amounted to - "all pretty much the same mate - just a case of which one you like the look of " !!!

Thanks for replies so far but I don't think I want a widescreen (or at least can't think why I would ?), and I have £150 limit.

If you bought your 19in CRT a few years ago and paid over £250 for it, chances are that it's a fairly decent bit of kit.

If that's the case, you'd probably be better off keeping it until you've saved a few bob more for a decent LCD screen. If you buy a cheap one you may be disappointed.

In the meantime, go and spend a fiver or so on computer mags in WHS. A lot of them give give comparative reviews of stuff like this.

For what it's worth, Which last tested 19" TFT monitors in January of this year.
They gave top marks to the Philips 190X6FB monitor. Cheapest online price at present is around £210. I've bought lots of stuff on Which recommendations and have never been disappointed.
