Probably been asked before but I'll ask again anyway;

1. Best cheap or (preferably) free DVD backup software to backup my laptop files.

2. Can you get rewritable dual layer media to get 8.5 Gb on one backup disk? Would be useful as I've got a dual layer DVD-RW burner in my laptop. Prefer to use rewritable in case I want to use the disk again.

Ta.

1. Most burners come with software to control the device (Nero, Sonic, etc.). For simple backups just drag n' drop files.

2. I belive you can get dual layer RW disks...

Thanks. Was looking for a few features like reiterative backups and encryption and/or compression. I've got Nero but I don't think that has those features.

Xp comes with backup software - any good?

Does compression & incremental but not direct to DVD, you'd have to backup to file and then copy the file to disk in a 2-step type situation.

It can do quite a lot of nifty things. I wouldn't trust it with your barge pole
I've heard one to many "I backed up and the damn thing says the file is empty... it's 30Gb in size where's my data?" stories to trust it with anything important; even if those stories are unfounded. I'd put it in the "use it but don't rely on it" category.

I'm affraid that at home I just make sure I have multiple copies of my documents floating around using SynchToy (copy on laptop, copy on portable HDD, copy on media machine).
