Hi,
I've had an enquiry from someone via email about buying my domain name.
The site's only for personal use, so I'm not adverse to the idea, and my hosts assure me that it's possible.

The email he sent mentioned what content was actually on the site at the moment so I'm reasonably happy that this wasn't some automated mass mail, but I guess I'm a naturally suspicious person.

Google doesn'ty seem to reveal any scams of this nature (more to do with forcing you to buy extra domains) and was wondering if the combined PH wisom had any thoughts on the matter?

alternatively, how much do I ask them for and what's the best way for me to accept payment (I'm in the UK, I think they're in the US).

Ta,
Jim.

ask them to make an offer.. you can always put the money into escrow if you prefer (escrow.com iirc)

I've bought a few domains from individuals and processed the transaction through sedo.co.uk. Just register an account with them, the buyer deposits the agreed money with sedo and you agree to transfer the domain to him. Painless and doesn't take too long. You can agree who pays Sedo's fee though it's usually the buyer. Doesn't matter where the buyer or seller is based.

They also do an appraisal service, but I've not used that so can't comment. Have a look through the domains for sale to get an idea of what yours might be worth.

There's a free appraisal service here: www.premiumdomain.com/

You submit your domain(s) and then get an e-mail back after about 12-24 hours (from a real human by the look of the one I got!)

One thing to be careful of...

If you say you're up for selling your domain, then they could make a claim that you're just squatting on one that's clearly appropriate for them, waiting for them to make you an offer. If this happens, you'll regularly just have it taken off you.

If you reply to them, make sure you're a little more cagey: "Well, I actually quite like the domain, everybody knows its mine, it's appropriate for what I want to have on it/who I am. However, I could possibly move my site to another, similarly appropriate one to allow you to have this if you're willing to pay me a reasonable amount to cover my costs in doing this...", etc. Might look a bit less opportunistic!
