Until yesterday when I attached a document to an email in outlook it saved it in a line under the subject line. Now it is attaching the documents directly into the mail (where the text is) and some people are saying they can not open my Word docs as they are showing as win.dat files.....Any ideas whats wrong anybody?

Could do with a bit more gen regarding version of Outlook, whether you're runing it as a POP or Exchange client but this doc and the links towards the end of it might be a good starting point.

If you enter winmail.dat in the search function on support.microsoft.com you should find an article and resolution that matches your problem.

HTH.

Inline vs. separate attachments is generally RTF vs. HTML format. Inline is RTF and can cause issues. Switch your default setting (and all mails manually if necessary) to HTML (or plain text).
