Given the current flakiness of our server room air con i've been tasked with finding some sort of temperature monitoring system. It needs t be able to measure temperature and aleret over /under certain thresholds and also chuck out some reports. Could do with 2 or 3 sensors to dot around the place.
Would be nice if it was in the "few hundred" range rather than the "getting on for a grand" range too.

Anyone got any recommendations?

you could always monitor the Servers via SNMP, most of inlet / outlet temp monitoring these days, just keep a general view with MRTG (or a.n.other snmp monitoring application) and code some alerts.

Indeed. Else the Nagios site recommends these which would fit the bill:

Sticking a network cable in introduces vulnerabilities, so long as you've adequately secured the box (and SNMP) it wont pose any significant issue... what most people don't realise is that SNMP is typically enabled by default on a lot of devices with a default PUBLIC community name!

Cheers for the input guys. Have gone for a Sensatronics EM1 feeding back via SNMP to MRTG (which i never knew existed until this thread). We've already got SNMP running for HP insight so no new security holes.
