Hi sorry if this has been asked before but the search engine is not as affective as it was.

I use dual screen every day on my desk top.
yestreday I nicked a second monitor form the office and plugged my laptop into it. the laptop has run dual screen in the past but it as been formated since then. but I can't get dual screen to work. it just mirrors the prmary screen and there are none of the dual screen options

Could somebody please tell me the magic word to whisper into my laptops ear to make it work!

You need to "extend" the desk top across the two screens - check your advanced properties in "display settings"

Have you tried increasing the resolution to a two screen resolution e.g. 2560x1024? other than that make sure you have downloaded the latest video drivers.

Sounds like you're using generic graphics card drivers, rather than the proper ones...
