I wish to capture a video from the web. It's in a streaming format and despite the fact that I can find it in my Temporary Internet Files and it shows the full size of 13MB I cannot rename it to save it as an avi, mpeg etc etc file.

The link is as follows (you'll find it interesting) and any assistance will be gratefully received.

Regards and thanks in advance

If you use Firefox have a google for "Video Download Plugin", Sadako uses it and it seems to work.
If that doesn't work then again, a quick google (or sourceforge search) for something like "mms save" or "stream ripper".

I have the plug-in for Forefox but this doesn't help as it doesn't open within a Firefox window; it opens in a the standalone Windows Media Player.

I've just switched to using IE7 by default to see what it's like. This after 2 years or so using Firefox.

easy. It works with mplayer on Linux. Open a terminal and give the following command:

mplayer -dumpfile localfilename.wmv -dumpstream mms://a1755.v12948e.c12948.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1755/12948/v0001/vod.ibsys.com/2006/0728/9591734.300k.wmv

It works definitely on Linux (the file is 13.4MB), and there is an unstable dev version of mplayer available for other systems too: www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html

Bodo,

Not being familiar with Linux or mplayer I'd appreciate a little guidance as I've downloaded mplayer for Windows but no matter what I do I cannot download the file. Where you've put 'localfilename.wmv' what do I need to type? A pathway to a file location?

Failing that, if you've captured the video would you PM it to me?

Skier, yes, the local file name is the name the file is saved to. I've found it in the directory from where I started the terminal window. Now if you download the file to c:/tmp/caputurestream.wmv (use backslashes) you will find it there after downloading. It takes quite a while, and it doesn't show the progress in the terminal. I ignored all error messages as well.

Failing that, I can't email it to you because 13MB may be too big for an attachment; however I'll upload it onto a webserver and PM you the link.

Bodo,

Huge thanks for doing that. I will look into the player and how to get it to do as I wish but thanks again for taking the time to capture and host the file.
