Sorry guys, yet another what laptop thread! I need a new laptop for work, have a budget of £1k and want something that's got a good screen and is very portable. I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP of my own which is great but work won't strech to one of these. Have looked on the Dell site and am looking at an Inspiron 640m Dual Core, but am nort sure about its weight.

Any advise would be gratefully received, even if it's just models that I should be avoiding.

I've an XPS gen 2 laptop (£1,600) so out of your budget however it is built on the Insprion chassis. With the 17" screen it's rather a big brute and takes a while to get used to it being on your lap... but it's nowhere near as heavy as it's size would suggest and even when running games my laptop doesn't get all that hot (true the memory cover and the two side vents do get hot but that's to be expected). I've had no issues wandering around with it in a laptop rucksack or tucked under my arm, unlike the Novatech AMD Athlon64 laptop I had a while ago which was an uttery back breaker.

The only thing I would say is get the best waranty options you can afford, even if it means dropping a few features. This applies regardless of whom you buy from as it's bloody annoying if your laptop goes tits up as opposed to an excuse to put feet up when the work one does the same

Got to be a PC?

I'm about to buy a Macbook for about a grand and if its anything like the 5 year old Powerbook G4 its replacing it'll be a stonking machine. But I understand macs aren't for everyone.

They are very good.. I have one as well as an older G4 powerbook. Plus it runs windows natively, and runs it well at that. However, I find I rarely have need for Windows, so 99.9% of the time its running good ol OS X instead.
Needs a gig or more of ram to run decently though..

Cheers, P

I've been very happy with my Toshiba M100 for the last 3 years. Dunno what it's latest incarnation is but it's light, small, has built in wifi and bluetooth and a cd burner. Decent sound, battery life, external controls for volume and wireless connections. I paid £600 second user off ebay. If you can live without a cd, the R100 was even lighter, 1kg, but a bit slower.

Im in the same position myself. £1k to spend and its mostly a work machine though I want it to play games too.
Im pretty much settled on this www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=124966 . Seems to tick all the boxes and has a 2 year warranty.

Edited to add that had I read the post properly Id have seen the word 'portable'.. at 3.9 kg its a bit of a bloater.
.

So far as avoiding Ive had no luck with Acer. Had 2 that have gone tits up after 14months. Dont think Id have another.
