Domain names registration

I'm going to get a friend a novelty domain name for his birthday.
Is it just a simple matter of registering the name with a company for £5 and then getting sent some documents over the post. What else can I add to it. If I wanted to put a brief website up can I pay for hosting for one year or anything.
I have no clue about this stuff so your help and ideas are appreciated.

You could pay for basic web hosting for a year. My mate runs a company offering all these services, I know it's my mate but they do run a tight ship and are extremely helpful. I know this because I've dealt with the company myself as they provided all the hosting, and everything that goes with it for the last place I worked.
