Have you run an up to date virus scanner? If not it would be a good idea.

No i dont have any virus program is it likely to be a virus? thats bad yeh!
I'm no expert in this but on the quick search I did some viruses will disguise themselves as this process so downloading a virus detector would be my first go at fixing it. Download the personal edition from here, install it and run the update and then get it to do a system scan. Other virus scanners are available I imagine but that's the one I use.
Yes, a virus would be bad but this should be able to get rid fo it for you or at least identify it so you can take steps or at the worst case reassure you that it isn't a virus.
Thanx for the tips everyone sorry it took a while downloaded registrysmart to scan system - found 271 problems!! but was only a free scan so still need to fix them somehow? I assume i also need to do a virus scan so will try that now. What program should i get is there any free ones or is it best to buy from pc world or similar??

noooooooo no no no, I havent seen that one specifically but there are loads of programs out there that do that, claim to find eleventy-million problems and you pay to fix them, its just a scam really.
Get AVG from free.gresoft.com
Also get the antispyware prog from the same place
Also get ad-aware SE personal from www.lavasoftusa.com (click on the 'home' section)
Then go to www.microsoft.com/downloads and get Windows Defender
Once all of them scan clean, if you still have the problem then we'l need to look closer.
Have fun

I've been having similar problems with my PC recently - various processes taking up all CPU time, can be explorer, firefox, windows media etc rather than just happening to one process (only one process will hog at a time though)
I'm ad-awared, spybotted, defendered, AVG'd, regcleaned, CCleaned, windows updated & defragged but it'll still happen on occasions. When it does i'll only rarely be able to get task manager up to kill the process. I'm beginning to think it's hardware related but can't really understand what might cause this - does the PH massive have any ideas?

Or Windows is shagged. It does that you know with regular monotony.
Norton AV and firewall are notorious at doing just this. Unfortunately other vague and unspecified things seem to cause it too and there seems to be no single easy cure. I would recommend you back up all your data and do a nice clean install. It's a good idea to do that every year or so anyway, its amazing how slow your machine can get with all the detritus that gets installed.
By the way, dual core systems handle this sort of fault much more nicely. Well, when I say nicely, I mean you don't even notice it (which of course could be a problem). Even a 50GHz single cpu system would be saturated by this sort of rogue process.

I had this exact same problem a week or so ago. SVCHOST was taking 100% CPU for about 5 minutes from boot up, then it would calm down and things would be half normal. Except, when i tried to do more than 1 thing at a time on the PC, it would get slow and freeze occasionally.
I have Nod32, ZoneAlarm free, and Firewall on my router, plus I 'ad-awared' the PC, and all came up with nothing. The answer was to rebuild the machine from a ghost image I had made of it.
I'm still not convinced it wasnt some nasty running as SVCHOST as I had been looking at porn, so really it could have been anything

Don't confuse svchost with scvhost (note the transposed letters) - they are not the same thing. The former is a required system component, the latter mayindicate the presence of a virus.
It could be related to an RPC vulnerability, so make sure that ports 135, 139 and 445 are not being forwarded. In XP's own firewall this is done by.... Control Panel -> Network Connections -> select your connection -> right click -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet is checked.

Make sure you're PC is up to date with the latest patches from Microsoft, and as indicated below GET A VIRUS SCANNER!
In you're concerned about Spyware, then download Ewido from here -> www.ewido.net/en/download/
Load Ewido and then click the Update tab at the top.
Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
Close Ewido. Do not run it yet.
Reboot into Safe Mode. (press F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears)
In Safe Mode, load Ewido and click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan.
Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This may take a long time...
Ewido will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action.
Click the Apply all actions button.
Ewido will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Restart back into Normal Mode.
Have fun.
