Just gone to renew my domain and they are trying to charge me £100 for the following:

Registration of .com domain for 2 years Remove item £30.00
Removal of Domain From the Redemption Period. Remove item £100.00

What does that mean and can I get it through anybody else? I'd like to get my domain name back, but I don't want to spend £100 on it....

I've moved your post to the Computing thread, where I'm sure Jamie B will be along shortly with some answers.

That doesn't sound normal, anytime we renew domains for clients it only costs about £25. We use Xcalibre but I've never tried to renew an existing domain with a new provider so I'm not sure how that works.

It's a .com if that makes any difference

Count your blessings it's not the company I used.

I registered a .com domain about 3 years ago, and all has been ticking along perfectly.

Then I get email a few weeks ago telling me that as I had ignored all their emails they were deleting my domain!

I then checked it out and discovered that my domain had expired.

Some stroppy emails went to them - and they came back telling me that they had emailed me. Which I know for a fact they did not.

So then I tried to renew the domain - but they would not let me - because I'm not on their systems ...... so how did they send me the email (and alledged other emails too).

So bottom line - I've given up. They have now parked the domain and are charging exorbitant fees for someone (me) to buy it.

Like bugger I will. I'll wait until it's properly available, and I'll buy it through Jamie B. I don't mind waiting a year.

You mean people who use this site actually work?! Just dug a little deeper and my domain expired back in the middle of September, but it was working up until a week or so ago....

Having spoken to the hosting people, they told me that if I don't renew after 30 days, it goes onto a hold 'thingy' and if I want to pay £15 for it I have to wait 65 days or cough up £100 before then.

I'd just wait until it becomes available again - bugger their £100 fee - that's what I'm doing.

Unless it's a business or something, in which case you'd have to bite the bullet.

I'm just going to hold on, I can sell my pictures from photobucket, it's not important that I have the domain. I'd rather spend/waste that £100 on shares or lottery

I'd personally recommend (as does 54 other PHers) jamie B.

The added benefit being that he hangs out here (when he's not in meetings)

I'm waiting for my domains to expire in 123-reg so I can move them over to Register1.
Bloody 123-reg wasters.

Ok, basically what's happened is that your domain has expired and entered the "Redemption Period", a full explanation of which can be found here. If you look your domain up on dnsstuff.com it should also show that status as being "Redemption Period".

In English, what this means in practice is that you're being given a "last chance" to renew the domain before it's handed back to the pool of available domains (after going through the Delete Pending status). So you must have missed some renewal date a few days ago.

Unfortunately your choices are few:
1 - Stump up the £100 to get the domain back out of redemption status
2 - Let it expire and hope nobody else claims it and re-register it

If it's it anyway desirable, you'll have no chance at #2 because domain spotters will be on it the second it exits pending delete.

What's wrong with 123-reg? I've been using them for years without any problems. Having said that, they have recently been bought by Pipex so perhaps things have changed.

What problems have you been having?

Ok,

as has been said, a domain in redemption does cost money to remove.. around £80 iirc with us..
You've two options

a) let it expire and be deleted and then just register it afresh
b) if you think that it's a popular domain / someone MIGHT snipe it / if you've used it a fair bit, pay the money.

there are some 'nice' people out there who, for the sake of a few quid, will register any recently deleted .com domains on the theory that for every £1000 they spend, they'll expect to find 2-3 domains that someone actually WANTS whom they can charge £2-3k each to!

It's a Gamble, £130 against £5.48 v £x000 potential!
