I will use it daily for business, but want some kick arse gaming capability for when I'm away from home (or in the evenings if I get a chance). Anyone have any ideas what the current best picks are?

Lenovo or Tosh

If you want heavy on the gaming, Alienware.

Excellent, thanks.

Put on virtual wetsuit, inflate virtual surf board, and we're off.

Alienware's laptops are whilst pretty not apparently that good these days, fairly generic parts and if the desktops are anything to go by... cheap n' quick construction (I swear their latest highend thing I saw reviewed had a PATA cable feeding the hard drive).
If it's gaming laptop's I'd suggest looking at either the Dell XPS or the high end Inspirion range (which the XPS use as the basic chassis).

XPS Gen 2 owner here and the thing is a bloody amazing tank of a machine.

By Dell yes. Considering Alienware is a direct competitor to their XPS brand... not surprising Alienware is going downhill.

Hate to say it but a few years ago I brought the Mitac chassis of one of their laptops (AMD64 - 3400 DTR, 1Gb RAM, ATi 9600 Pro), saved £300 and got the same equipment. For £30 I could of got some red spray paint and do exactly what they were doing (someone stripped their chassis and found spray paint on the plastics lol).
