Demon broadband
Discussion
BT did ours about a year ago however we were only able to get the quote 8mbs for about a month, usually connect at about 5.3mbs at the moment.
Anything above 4mbs seems pretty good though.
Actually looking to change from BT as they are an expensive joke. Would you recommend Demon or anyone got any better suggestions?

I've got it at work and it's the best of a bad bunch for us, we're meant to have an 8mb connection.....yea my arse we have it's normally less than 2 however it's still twice as good as the wanadoo one we had before and if you take into account that we are that far from the exchange that the area code changes if you cross the road, I'm not that displeased, phone support in english and pretty good and I've only had a flakey line once in a year, for which they blamed BT anyway.
In the first week or so, your download speed will rise and fall as the equipment works out the optimal signal to noise ratio vs bit error rate.
If your exchange is supported by BeThere's ( www.bethere.co.uk ) ADSL2+ equipment, you can get up to 22Mbit, with 12Mbit being about average for 1.5 miles from the exchange.
On Saturday, I got a letter from <a credit agency> who had been passed a bill by <a certain ISP> for £11:75, demanding payment. Now, I cancelled my dialup account with <a certain ISP> in early Feb, with the words "If I get a bill for £11:75 for next month’s payment, plus further threats of passing it on to a debt collection agency, I shall not be pleased to say the least". 48 hrs later, I do at least have an apology and am now wondering how much to bill them for my time.

I was bumped up to MaxDSL in September, but due to the distance from my exchange, I can only get 3-4 Mbit. Bizarrely, whilst my connection speed has increased, my ping in online games seems to have gone up
Demon are still a pretty quick and reliable service provider - I've been with them since the days of v90 dial-up
. However, apparently they have recently been put up for sale by Thus

probably due to interleave being turned on by default

Been using Demon bb for over 3 years now with barely a couple of hours of downtime in total. They're not the cheapest, but works perfectly without any grief, plus you have a fixed IP address.
Anybody know an easy way to check your connection speed?

Thank you - 5.5Mbps for me.
Name any ISP and you can find someone who thinks they're the bees knees and someone else who thinks they suck little green toads. And this is true of just about anything you ask about on the 'net.
I've been with Demon since they were operating out of a cupboard in Finchley, and the service level (in dialup days) used to "sawtooth" up and down with a period of a couple of months as they acquired customers, got overloaded, bought more kit, rinse and repeat. I haven't had an issue with them for years. OTOH, I also have a Tiscali account (don't ask) and their Usenet server is pants, their DNS goes up and down like a whore's drawers (and regularly drops whole sections of the net).

I'm with Pipex and they aren't even offering anything over 2Mb to their business customers (of which I am one).
New retail customers can get 8Mb and existing customers cannot upgrade "at present".
Coming very close to ditching Pipex despite being a customer for over 10 years.

Good luck...
Took me nearly a day to get them to cancel my old dialup account last week.malman said:

Do you know if there is any way to get this switched off? Also, would this mean a penalty in terms of stability and/or link speed?

I think you have to put in a request with your isp. They shouldnt charge you for it, but if you then don't like the results i expect they might get a bit peeved if you tell them to turn interleaving back on. It shouldnt affect stability or sync/actual speed adversely, so if gaming is important to you (surely not more than PH!) then have a look on your isp's forums to see how other people have faired with 'fast mode' turned on and how they went about it.
