Some of you may have seen this before in the news but for those who have not be aware that there is currently doing the rounds a few video links of varying subjects usually posted on forums such as this and from where I read about this. If you click on the link it will be re-directed to another web address and immediately say it can't play the video and prompt you to download a codec to play. Obviously don't this is the virus package you will be downloading.

Here's the BBC on the story - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology

I'm assuming this is the security hole in media player? I thought mankysoft patched it the other month... or has the band-aid come off again :S

VLC set as default playback for every video file I've got. If someone sends me a DRM'd WMA/WMV it gets PlayFair'd and thrown in to VLC

I don't think this is a just media player thing, as I read that in most cases (if not all) the video is an embedded video within a webpage so it could be any player that's used (Flash Player, WMP, Quicktime) it's says you don't have the codec to play it and it prompts a download, which the unsuspecting person double clicks to install.

No offence meant but... that'll be the same group of people who went told "Don't open that" open it, and the same group that when told "Don't click OK to everything. Read what it's saying" click OK to everything.
The complain bitterly about the stupid compuper ain't doin' stuff properly, without actually giving you any idea of what the computer is doing and what it is they're trying to do on it. Or they take the small nugget of wisdom you've given and apply it to everything, recording a TV program on the video becomes 'downloading' copying files from a CD is 'downloading', hell the only thing they don't refer to with this new term is the actual thing the term applies to, instead it's 'copying from the website'.

So... that'll be my mother-in-law then. :S

hehe

I think with the massive growth in Youtube, Google Video, Daily Motion and all the other video viewing sites more and more people are being sent links or seeing links in forums which they click on, can't see the video a box says if you can't see it download the codec here and install to see. Rather than catching out the basic user (Pc virgin) I think it could quite easily catch out other experienced people too.

Perhaps, but... if I visit a site and the video doesn't play. Rather than clicking the link I'll just go "not worth it"
