Guys

As per title really, a mate of mine is after a new desktop with a budget of £500.

It'll be just for general use - surfing the net, downloading etc etc.

Any ideas?

Do you need new monitor?

Check out Dell's low end stuff and www.novatech.co.uk as well.

Yup, he's after a monitor too, we've actually been looking at the Dell stuff but I thought I'd ask on here anyways...

Personally, always buy under the assumption it will go wrong. Hey if computers didn't go 'splat' this forum wouldn't be full of support requests
Dell's are pretty robust little boxes (their build quality went down after the old GX1 and seems to have come back a fair bit) although it's always good to make sure you've got a decent waranty package (onsite is preferable to RTB ) and if possible make sure home conetents insurance covers the beastie.

So is it fair to say that a Dell is pretty much the one to go for here?

I would go for a set of components myself, but if you don't like that approach then stuff is much of a muchness. Try to avoid integrated graphics though.

Is he tied to Windows?

If not, a Mac Mini makes a fabulous little interweb/email box.
