Hello from home!

So I finally decided to get it installed at mi casa and I've successfully managed to configure a wireless talk talk broadband connection (having all the instructions in a nice leaflet helps), albeit had to make a quick call to customer services a short while ago - was polite but didn't answer my query - but after a little fiddle around and me, activating the ADSL line ( rolleyes ) I'm up and running!!

So, any problems with talktalk so far? - none. They've done exactly what they said they were going to do when I signed up. thumbup

Long may it continue. :fingerscrossed:

I must admit when I saw the team of BT vans down our street this morning I had my concerns that Houston was going to have a problem tonight but no!

One Question - How can I find what mb download I'm getting - my speed says 54mbps - Is that 5.4meg? I should be getting up to 8meg apparently.

It's the first time we've had broadband at home, so I can't compare it against any competitors. Obviously there's been a lot of bad press about talktalk not delivering the service they've promised to do, so I suspect what's happening is that they are making new customers a priority over those who've been on the waiting list for a considerable length of time and seem content to sit and wait until they are able to be given a connection.

I ordered the package just over a month ago, was given a phone date that they stuck to and they were about a week out on the "go live" date.

54 Mbps would be the speed of the wireless link between your PC and the modem/router, if it's actually running at 54 Mbps you must be getting a very good wireless signal.

The link between your modem/router and the internet will be much slower. You should be able to access the modem/router's administration interface to find out what speed it is running the connection at, and you can use an online broadband speed test to find out what data transfer rate you are actually getting. For example: www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

Thanks for the link.

Hmmmm......1.2 mbps downstream, 0.3 mbps upstream.

That's not so good.

For reference: I've had the BT 8Mb service for 6 weeks and I'm averaging 6.3down and 0.5up (range 5.7-6.8 and 0.4-0.6) - cost is GBP33.00 per month

Thanks for that, when I've got a stiff drink to hand and somewhere to take a lie down I'll give taltalk customer services a call.

Wireless eh? 802.11G right?
54megaBITS per second (Mb/s or mbps).
5.4megaBYTES (MB/s), would, be the cards hypothetical maximum not allowing for protocol overheads. But in real terms call it 4MB/s.
Broadband speed 8Mb/s, or 0.8MB/s again hyopthetical maximum, no protocol overheads, etc.

Your wireless card is far faster than the broadband connection

8meg broadband isn't 8MB/s, BT can install that for you but be prepared to use excessive amounts of KY when the bill + charges for digging the road up arrive hehe
