I need to order a new wifi router for my uncle's house as the one at present keeps dropping the signal to a room on the same floor about 25 feet away, through 2 walls and also to upstairs. It doesn't look the best (small metal box, no brand name) and the antenna on the back isn't a socket type, just a short length of thin wire pushed into the plastic antenna bit.

What's my best option for the router, at a sensible price? Should I be getting a different high gain antenna with it to get a better signal?

Not really surprising, is it? I'd look for ways to move the AP closer to the middle of the house to reduce the distance you're covering, if I were you.

Netgear DG834PN still the longest range/widest coverage out there (legally)

DSL, not ADSL. I looked at their DSL equivalent and it got pretty bad reviews and is £100...
