Hopefully you guys can help me with another computing dilemma, after my Network and Printers post....

I have a Netgear DG834 PN. I've set it up (no need to use the CD, I just plugged in picked up the signal and set it up according to my ISP). However, the router keeps dropping the wireless signal - it just won't load any pages in IE. I then disable the wireless on the computer, then enable it again. Once I've done this, the wireless will be dropped again within 10mins. If the computer is hard wired to the route, then the internet connection remains intact

After phoning Netgear, I spoke to someone who couldn't really understand me and vice-versa rolleyes They just told me to register the product (which I've now done) and to phone back. After waiting over 15 mins in the first place I want to do this as a last resort - hence I'm consulting the wise people of PH

Any ideas as to what could be causing the signal to drop, and how to rectify the problem, would be greatly received!

Thanks in advance,

Darren

How many computers connect wirelessly, just the one? In this case, are you sure it is the router and not the laptop? I use netgear stuff at work. We have a wireless access point in a hot desk office on one site. I assumed the unit kept dropping out, but since noticed that it was only my laptop doing it, not anyone else's so I guess it is the PC and not the wireless box. Having said that, I have found most wireles routers I have installed require an occasional re-boot to restore wireless connectivity.

So none of the PCs can get a signal when it drops?

What's the signal strength like on the PCs when it *is* working?

Try setting the router wireless section to use a different radio channel.

Have you tried experimenting with different wireless channels? Interference can cause a big problem for wireless networks, yet strangely, it will affect some computers more than others. It was a problem that dogged my (netgear 834somethingorother) wireless network for weeks, if not months. Home cordless phones are often the main culprit I suspect and it may not even be yours thats doing it. Could be a neighbours! Im pretty sure this is what happened to my network here.
I found I could never completely get rid of the interference, but changing wireless channels helped a lot.

This might not be your problem mind, but could be worth looking into anyway..

Cheers, P

check you have the latest firmware on the router
check you have the latest drivers for your wireless adapter
try using WPA encryption instead of WEP
try changing channel
if not using a Netgear rangemax adapter then run the router in 802.11 b+g mode - not "auto 108"
if using manufacturer supplied wireless utility disable the windows zero config service
if using windows/and or manufacturer utility check in the properties/advanced of the network connection, disable 802.1x port based authentication

...all the above can help with stability - I ran a DG834PN for 18 months and it was rock solid...

Darren - out of interest what make is your computer and what wireless card does it have? who is your isp?

I've been suffering the same problem recently with my Sony Vaio but my partners Samsung laptop seems to have no problems. My signal strength remains "excellent" but it keeps dropping the connection. Very annoying. Things have improved marginally since removing Norton Anti-everything software but it is still not great. Things seem to improve when she isn't using her laptop. My laptop has the standard Intel Wireless Pro II something or other card that came with it whilst she is using a Belkin pcmcia card. I had wondered if I should try another wireless card for my laptop but then the fact the signal strength so often shows as excellent suggested to me that that wasn't the issue.

I have the same router and it drops occassionally (once every two / three months perhaps) so it is not normal behaviour. I originally bought a DG834 GT (I think that was the code anyway) - and it did exactly what you describe - so I sent it back and upgraded to the DG834PN, I would call whoever you brought it from - tell them that it doesn't work and ask them to replace it

Righty guys....very odd thing has happened....

For some reason, and as I type this post, the signal hasn't dropped in over 3 hours of solid use. I'm not sure what has happened! No setting have been changed. Sod's law I'll need to post another response shortly to say how the signal's just dropped!

I can confirm I have a Sony Vaio laptop (model code - VGN-S3HP) with built-in wireless - I don't know what wireless hardware it uses.

After leaving my other computer (A Compaq desktop with wireless card) on for a couple of hours, it loaded up any internet page, no problem!

So the Vaio seems to be problem now, not (as in the title of the thread) the router.

Signal strength is "Excellent" 54Mbps when it drops.

As for any interferance....Occasionally I have my mobile phone next to my computer. A LAN telephone and radiator is right next to the router. However, this was the case when I used my old Belkin router and that never lost a signal. (only replaced it because one day it just didn't switch on anymore!)

As for my ISP (I await the moans and groans)....it's AOL paperbag
I have no security either on this wireless - we live in middle of no where, and I do mean the middle of no where, so not really much call to set up a password, etc - it would just confuse my Mum! hehe

Thanks

Darren

nothing wrong with AOL if you dont load all their software on ...very reliable service in general and no throttling/traffic shaping on P2P stuff.

I would put money on it being the integrated wireless on the Sony - ive seen that a lot.

Open up your network connections and goto the properties of the wireless adapter - it will probably be something like an Intel 2200BG...Sony are pretty poor at posting any driver updates on their site so goto Intel.com and support/driver downloads and get the generic driver package and download/install that.

I bet if you check the driver version on the integrated adapter its like 2-3 years old.....

snap and snap, and we're seeing the same problems. Odd.

Double click on the little monitor on your toolbar and click Properties and that will show you what wireless card your laptop is using to connect wirelessly. Mine says Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. You can then make sure you have the latest drivers???

yep - they can be very ropey those 2200BGs ...but later drivers are fine - latest is June 06 I think - just check in device manager/hardware right click on adapter then driver......

che6mw, mine too sai Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG. I've just downloaded the drivers from the intel website and installed it.

For some odd (but pleasing) reason the computer hasn't lost the signal in over 24 hours now. Despite this I still installed the driver.

Thanks for everyone's input and advice thumbup Now I just hope the CD writer sorts itself out hehe

Darren
