From the Mini to a set of JBL Creature IIs.

It's not earth shattering, but it makes a pleasing enough sound without being ugly as sin.

"Sigma Tel C-Major" mine is apparently. Still can't complain, the ikkle sub built in to the laptop at least gives the machine some oompf

Winamp 5.24, you are aware of a few security issues with the older versions ?

play it via a 2.1 speaker set, took out the creative as it appeared to be defunct,. kept getting badsound driver, unistalled it totally and went to onboard 5.1, then had badsound problem, reinstalled dirextX 9.0c and seems fine now

strangley the sound appears better with onboard than it did with the creative audigy Z2

Smaller memory foot print, quicker to load, plays audio only without having to wrestle video playback from it EVERY GOD DAMN TIME IT'S USED. I'll stick with the 2.x generation personally.

I use my motherboard's onboard sound card (something crap and realtek) but using the digital output to go to a mid-top end Yamaha 5.1 amp so D/A conversion is done inside there.

It doesn't sound too bad but I probably wouldn't notice the difference between that and a fancy input!

What does irritate me though is a stutter which I cannot get rid of. Very irritating. Any ideas?

don't know what you mean by stutter but in most cases, earthproblems or loops are to blame for
strange noises.
there is also something to gain if you put your plugs the right way in your mains, individually measure the chassis earth voltage of your components, between the earth of the mains,
then put it in the way it was lowest, do the same for the rest of your components, then hook it up again with only 1 component connected to earth, now listen if there's any improvement.

iTunes 7.02 to a Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 system in the office (old but pretty good), alas not got a digital soundcard, so just stereo surround.

Otherwise AirTunes to the big stereo upstairs, in-car iPod systems or iPod with Altec Lansing speakers when travelling.

Well the stutter is like a CD skipping or something, the song "skips" a few millisecs back - it messes up your timing if you are singing along to it! So I am pretty confident it's not a connection issue because that would just cause noise or moments of silence wouldn't it?

If the stutter is always at the same place in a song it is probably an encoding error.

To answer the OriginalPoster:

I store my collection of MP3s and raw WAV files on my apple laptop and on a remote (networked) linux server. The server holds considerably more tracks. The linux server acts as an iTunes server with a subtle change. If I request a WAV file to play, the server first de-clips it and then presents it. This gives a 2-3second delay but is quite important..

So the laptop gets the music and sends it back over the air to one of two Airport Express boxes. One is just plugged into a stereo, the other goes optically into first a Behringer rate converter/re-clocker so it is up-sampled to 88.2k, and then is fed into a Behringer parametric EQ (usually flat) for D-A conversion. Therefore I get a CD track declipped, up-sampled and converted to analog pretty much perfectly (upsampling makes the conversion much simpler!).

It is necessary to remove clipping because the Behringer stuff, although budget for pro-audio, still makes you listen to the clipping, when all CD players generally mush up those bots and fudge the sound so you will not hear it to much. Modern CDs are usually compressed and then clipped by the mastering monkeys who want them to sound 'louder'. In reality this is picked up by the ear as 'noise', making people turn down or switch of the music as the cue of noise obviously dictates.

Thus leads to the Globs test for Hi-Fi/Cds: If you want to turn it up, the quality is good. If you want to turn it down/off, the quality is poor. Try it some time. Note that this is not frequency response related, but one of higher odd-order harmonics being distastful to the ear. (Even orders sound nice however, proving the uselessness of THD measurements).

More on iTunes serving (free source code) and declipping (my free source code) can be find at my web here:
www.cutestudio.net/doku.php?id=hi-fi:cd:cd

You need linux to compile it though, or to know how to convert it to windows as I do not use that.

Nope it's not in the same place in the song. I'm pretty sure it's a motherboard latency type issue.

Then you probably have the wrong driver installed and/or too little buffer memory assigned to it. Try upping the priority and memory if possible, I use apple so have never done this: a windows expert would be better to point you in the right direction.
Finding the right driver (as opposed to a driver that seems to work most of the time) is often quite tricky too!

Depends, either:
iTunes through standard PC (crap) speakers,
iPod to 250W Sharp stereo, or soon
laptop (iTunes) to the stereo
