Over the weekend I bought, downloaded and installed Conterstrike and and steam.

Ever since then, the bloody pc keeps just shutting down.

Fire it up,and it will load windows and then about 10 minutes later, windows will just shut down.

Tried uninstalling everything, tried sys restore, nothing seems to make any difference.

Thinking about reinstalling windows........if I can find the cd key.

Any ideas, its driving me mad.

TIA

Counterstrike rules

As for why the pc keeps shutting down, does it come up with an error first? If not, check the event logs (start/run/eventvwr) to see what the reason is.

Hmmmmm, Love the old PC keeps shutting down problem. I bet Microsoft have a direct link to everybody's PC and think I know lets have a laugh and shut it down a few times that'll piss em off. Failing that I would check that the CPU is not overheating. Make sure the fan on the cpu is working and check the temps. A lot of motherboards have a built in monitor and you need to go into the bios to have a look and see if it sky rockets when turned on.

Ok. Does it shutdown (i.e. kill itself/gracefully halt) or reboot?

If possible pull up the Event Viewer (Control Panel > Administrative Tools) and see if anything appears just before the system goes bang.

If it's rebooting all the time and your running WinXP right click "My Computer" > Properties > Advanced. Make sure the "Automatically restart" box is NOT checked, this will present the blue screen instead of Windows just trying to recover.

Jot down anything pertinent from this blue screen (i.e. IRQ_NOT_LESS_EQUAL_TOO nv4disp.dll) or take piccie with a camera and post it It might point us in the right direction

It justs shuts dwon as though you have clicked turn off.

Will have another play when I get home tonight.

Do have a feeling it may be heat related, problem has only raised its head since I started using the PC for gaming.

Will *hopefully* post more details later.

If you suspect heat open the side panel up and poke inside. Grab a paint brush and remove the dust from all the heat sinks. Takes all of 5min and will eliminate it as a possibility.

Right.Just spent all bloody evening on the bastrad.

Safe mode scanned it for peace of mind, all clear.

Sys restore to 8 weeks ago.Took forever.

Has been running for about 4 hours, sys restore had jsut finished and then it shut down.
Rebooted and had a look at event log, its showed
Event id 7000
The SecuROM user Access service failed to start coz it couldnt find the file specified.

Does that mean anything ?
Will have the side off later and have a good clean out, but tbh its not that bad, I put some more ram in it last weekend, so know what the guts look like.

SecuROM is a CD copy protection system. Have you installed any copy protected games recently?

See here for some suggested remedies:

Hope that helps!

[k]

[edited to add for clarity - Counterstrike/Steam doesn't use SecuROM as far as I know]

Nope it doesn't, so that'll be something left over from another game most likley. What have you recently uninstalled that's gamish and game on a CD or DVD?

If nothing, who else has access to the computer? Go ask them.

Once they've been happily chastised for this, hunt around google to looking for removal tips for that peice of copy protection.

Good luck with the copy protection, but if you get nothing on the screen or event logs I'd more suspect a simple temperature cut-off. Can you download software for your 'board on the net ? Most have some monitoring software - you can watch the temp rise, and change the "off" level.

Ok, Im going to be running at the outer limits opf my knowledge here.PC ran fine last night for over 4 hours after I removed the securom thing. However, I did leave the side off it, to see.

Tonight, I put the side back on and it shut doen after 2 and bit hours.Event logs show clear, so I am suspecting heat as an issue.

1.Why is it suddenly a problem ? Im not doing anything different apart from a bit of gaming, and I can hear the fan speed up during this.

2.Is there any software that I can use to monitor temp and also maybe control the fan speed ?
pc is dell d5000.

Oh, and the shut downs occur without any gaming in progress, juts light use such as this.

Hope you can help, starting to piss me off lots now.

Definetly sounds like heat.
Could be a build up of dust, failing thermal compound, weakening of the heatsink retention mechanism, CPU on slow thermal death (seem a few Athlon XP 1700+'s do this), PSU geting old and cranky.

In short anything. I'd scout out the board and make sure all fans are spinning correctly, the heatsink is firmly attached to the processor and that the PSU isn't making odd buzzing noises or getting overly warm.

As for monitoring the temps, not sure. I used to say MBM5 but it's not been updated in quite a while. It might work though.

Have a nose around in the BIOS you should be able to see the cpu temp in there somewhere. So next time the pc shuts down reboot asap and check the temp.(don't change anything in the bios unless you feel happy to do so!)
I give all the PC's in my house a good strip down and blow out with an airline every 6 months this stops the dust build up turning into a thermal blanket. If you go down this route do not let the airline spin the cpu fan as it will f**k the bearing.

Do you know if this has happened with the 1800+ too? My computer started showing these symptons earlier this year...

It's the same vintage so I would suspect 'yes they can do this' although my actual experience of it happening (perpetual overheating, no matter what) is with 1700+'s.

PC is only about 18 months old IIRC.cpu is Pentium 4 3.0 gig .No fan on the cpu, just a sink, held on by a bent paper clip kind of stylee.PSU is warm, but I wouldnt have said overly.

Its just done it again, so I have also removed the additional Kingston ram fitted last week too.
