I'm unlikely to be able to help, since I rarely go near X, but some thoughts anyway.

Does it really say that? Specifically "/ect" and not "/etc" ? If it does then there's the (or at least a) problem, I know nothing about mandrake but I would be suprised if it had a /ect directory, since just about everything else has /etc.

Further along, execve is a 'C' command to load and run a program, the errno value of 2 means "file not found", so it looks like startx is trying to run /etc/x11/x (assuming you mistyped the error message) but can't find it. Is it there?

Mandrakelinux release 10.1 community for i586
Kernel 2.6.8.1-10mdk on an i686 / tty1
Local Host Login: (which i put in "root"
Password: (which i put in "admin"

[root@localhost root]# startx

(i get the following message
execve failes for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X Server
xinit: No such process (errno 3) Server error

Have you actually installed X?

Unusual for a modern distro not to 'just work', did all go well during the install? Might be quicker/easier to just nuke it and install again. Failing that you could check the logs in /var/log/whatver for more details. In this ubuntu install it's Xorg.0.log for the detailed X startup logs, might be the same for Suse?

X isn't usually in /etc

Try this at the command line:

type X
type startx

and let us know what the output is.

I'm expecting to see the following:

# type X
X is /usr/X11R6/bin/X

# type startx
startx is /usr/X11R6/bin/startx

Which virtualisation software are you using?
If it's VMWare, have you installed vmware-tools?

That is what its saying.

startx is /usr/X11R6/bin/startx[/quote]

so why when i start the GUI it cant find Startx?

Im running VirtualPC

Been a very very long time since I dabbled with Mandrake.

Did you tell it to install X?
Have you been through any configuration steps during installation with X?
Is their something called *scratches head* sod it.... forgot it'll end in .config usually ins /etc/X11 ?

Sounds like there's something wrong with startx. It's only a shell script so it can be edited to fix it. If you want to mail it to me (via PH) then I'll take a look to see if there's anything obvious.

It sounds as if you don't have a X server install (Probably xfree86 in Mandrake 10 - Why are you running such an old dist?)

What happens if you run
# xinit
This should start the X server and bring up an xterm

or try running
# /etc/X11/X
This should start just an X server (ctrl+alt+backspace to exit out)

If neither of these work you need to install a X server, either xfree86 or Xorg, I don't know how to do this in Mandrake.
It sound's like you've already got some utils and possibly a client installed.
