Is HDMI 1.3 just another load of marketing mumbo jumbo?
Discussion
Standards have already been built on it.
Dolby's TrueHD requires HDMI 1.3 for encoded audio stream transport to compatible equipment (though decoded uncompressed TrueHD can travel over any HDMI) and TrueHD is a mandated part of the HD-DVD standard and optionally forms part of the Blu-Ray standard so will feature heavily on all content in future.
Today, not too much of a consideration but when the format war is over its likely that TrueHD will flourish and moving the encoded stream between components will mean the best level of flexibility to attain a quality sound.

It'll make the hardware cheaper is probably why, as compression will be handled from software (one off cost), plus I am guessing be better for broadcast as requires less bandwidth.
The audio stream on the disc is encoded, moving an encoded stream means that you decide on the quality of the component which does the decoding i.e. you dont let the comparatively crap software decoder in the HD player decode the audio stream with HDMI 1.3 you get the option to add an external high quality decoder.

there is additional colour infomation although i belieive there is currently not screens can benafit from this
True , lots moer bandwidth for higher bit depth colour.
But as HD-DVD and BR dont store it, and what they do store current TV tech cant reproduce very easily I doubt we'll see much use for this in a long time.
