My father in law has the modem that comes free with freeserve i think it's called a thompson speedtouch.
I was working on his pc last night and spotted his avg anyi virus was'nt up todate.
The reason for this he has to open IE to go online then manualy update his antivirus.
Which he forgets.
Mine goes online as the pc boots so no worrys regarding avg.
Is there a way round this so it can go online automaticaly without using dial up?
Thanks

You might try unticking the boxes in the connection properties to prompt for the number, name & password - so it just dials, then in internet explorer/tools/options/connections set it to 'allways dial'. Dunno if that will deffo work though for what you want.

USB Splat thing? Two lights on the front?

If so, but him a cheap ADSL modem, it will give better performance than a SpeedTouch unit, it will also alleviate the 'dial' issues as you can jack straight in to Ethernet and sorted.

I suffered with a Speedtouch modem for a while - fine in Windows, but I started getting interested in using Linux, which seems to dislike USB modems generally and the Speedtouch especially. Went the ethernet route in the end, as it was driving me mad.

Never thought of that.
Thanks for the advice.
