Outlook Express has lost my mails

Outlook Express appears to have dumped all my incoming mails July - Nov.
Maybe more...my total of unread messages has dropped by about 6,000 (don't ask!).
Anybody know why, or how I can rertrieve them?
Inbox messages jump from 1 June to 22 Nov. I downloaded IE7 on the 21st, and it changed one feature of OE. Wondering if that's the culprit.
