344MB ?

On my 1GB system it's automagically set for 1.5GB of swap space. Assuming we're both running the same operating system (XP-SP2) then I'd suggest you need more physical RAM.

Is your hard drive nearly full, thus preventing windows taking as much virtual memory as it needs?

As pointed out though, additional physical memory would alleviate the need for as much virtual memory anyway...

Sounds like you are short of RAM - how much do you have installed ? So Windoze is using the hard drive as virtual RAM - but sounds like your Hard Disk is nearly full too ? Try cleaning off some clutter - download ccleaner from www.download.com

Yeah sorry, it's a pain in the ass. But if it's recommending 300 and using 400 then I'd say it's already swapping heavily.

Right click on My Computer (2k / XP) and it'll show you the basics of your computer. Mine says:
Intel(R) Pentium(R)
processor 2.26Ghz
791 Mhz, 1.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

If the amount of RAM you have is less than 512Mb you might want to consider upgrading.

1/2 gig minimum realy, I'd throw your system into crucial.com/uk and pick up 1GB of ram.

Swapping to HDD is excrucialtingly slow.

See what the typical virtual memory commit charge is, and make sure you have at least that much physical RAM and space for a swap file at least double that size, and still at least 20% free on the disk.

Once it's fitted you might need to open the properties for Virtual Memory again, just to make sure Windows has recalculated. But other than that you should be sorted.

Yeah, go there and make sure the figures have changed. If not toggle between 'manual' and 'automatic' and the damn OS should get the right idea

Set it to auto and reboot, if that doesn't work set it to manual, 1500MB and forget about it.
