Ok, bear with me cos I am not the most techie minded.

My OH has treated me to a new lap top, so I now have a shiny new Acer Aspire 5000, with a Turion processor and all sorts of other things, it has a 60 GB hard drive (don't turn your nose up... more than adequate for me... I couldn't fill a 40!)

Anyway, he kindly spent a few hours finishing the windows install, doing my drivers etc, then we moved all the stuff over from the old laptop using the file transfer thingy.

So far so good.

But I have noticed that the drive is partitioned, and both parts of the drive are at 30GB, so obviously C is getting somwhat full, and all that is on D is the back up that came preloaded, is there aynway to remove the partition, or divide it differently to enable me to have more space on C without having to completly reformat the drive?

And if there is, can you please tell me in simple terms how to do it ta

There isn't going to be an easy way of repartioning it without obtaining some extra software to do it.

An application called Partition Magic would be able to sort it out for you.

Unfortunately a common situation. A copy of Partition Magic will resize an NTFS partition but having snooped around the internet they don't offer a working demo of the thing. You should be able to find it in PC World.

You could format the D: drive and move your My Documents folders to the new drive, this probably won't help much as I'm guessing that 90% of the used space is application related and not actual stuff you've created.

Oh no you don't!

Can be very easily done - instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/32559

Easier on XP than W2K - but have just done three W2K laptops which originally had a C drive of 2Gb & an E of 16Gb (single 18Gb disk) - now just have a single C drive of 18Gb. However you'll need to save anything you may have on the second partition.

Ooh thanks for that, will pass the link on to the OH tonight and he can play, then if it all goes tits up it's his fault.

Already decided that I am going to send a backup of my system over to his pc (he's got oodles and oodles of space to play with on there!)

Ok numpty question time before I break my lappy.

Have had a look at the instructions and I assume that I am extending drive C (and getting rid of D as that is the one with nothing on) but reading the instructions it says that I can only extend a drive that is formatted with NTFS, and my C drive is actually in a FAT32 format. If I change this format will it lose everything on C?

Really don't want to break this pooter!

Thank you

Have had a look at the link and printed it all off. He's said to carry on working today then back up mystem to his pc tonight and he'll then play. So at least I will have everything backed up on another pc before we try.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Ok, am stuck now.

Him in bed so I am trying this, I have followed the instructions and converted C to NTFS and that went ok, (with no data/settings loss at all) now I have deleted the D partition to make the 'space' unallocated and then started follwing the instructions for extending C. But I get a message up saying that it cannot extend, make sure volume is valid for extending.

This message is pointing to the fact that C is my system drive, and the instructions say that you cannot extend a partition if the system page file is located on that partition. So move the page file to a partition you do not wish to extend.

So now what? where do I find this page file and how do I move it and allow the drive to be extended?

I am getting that fed up of this that I am seriously coming close to just reformatting, but even then I would probably still end up with it partitioned!

Right click my computer > Properties >Advanced. Where it says Performance click settings. Select the Advanced tab and near the bottom it has a Virtual memory section. Click change and select no paging file for both C & D. It might grumble but do it, then reboot and follow the previous instructions.

Once it's all done repeat the above and select a system managed Paging File.

That should do it.

Ok have done all this, but am still getting the 'diskpart failed to extend the volume. Please make sure that the volume is vaild for extending'

It does say in the destructions! that system volumes may be blocked from being extended, is there anyway of 'unblocking' this?

Sorry about all the questions, but I am a total novice on these things!

Normally the system volume is protected from fiddling with, Windows doesn't like tinkering with it whilst Windows is running. Can you run this partition editor from the recovery console?

I'm afraid Diskpart won't let you extend the System partition (in your case the C: Drive). See this MS article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/88698

You'll need to get a third-party utility to do this - I've used both Partition Magic (PowerQuest - now Symantec) and Disk Director (Acronis) and they're both good.
