Brought daughter a Laptop for crimbo.

And i want her to have the Internet all around the house, but i dont want it to slow down my connection upstairs also.

Main computer is upstairs in bedroom with NTL Cable Modem with broadband. Don't want to spend loads of money either.

She plays on games alot and downloads things from time to time so i dont want my internet connection on the main computer to suffer, been thinking about gettin this Router.Whould that do the job?

Any ideas and help whould be great!

Yes. I have exactly that kit and it works well, is easy to set up and provides good connection speed over the wireless.

The only issue I have is that I have to reset it from time to time - switch off and on - to establish the broadband connection. Not a problem, and to be fair something I also had with the Orange wireless and talk box I had prior to the Linksys.

I found this site: www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk invaluable when I was buying my first WiFi router.

peter, this is probably no use because there hard to get now(ebay maybe)Kcorp router KLG575 gold 108mbps what a piece of kit, range no problem, reliable o yes, blew away the well known brands in a popular computer mag shootout, honestly if you could get one of these cheap you will not be dissapointed.i would always recommend a aerial extender for any router you use that i metre cable puts the aerial in a much better position for good coverage, mine go,s through 2 walls and 100ft down the garden.i guess theres unit just as good as this now,my netgear 834 GT was not even in the same ball park though(but that blew up)so much for netgear.my mate as the same set up and he sold hes netgear 834GT(terrible range)after using the Kcorp.

Some things that have popped in my head,

Can i have the computer upstairs wired still?

Will i get the same speed that i am getting now when the laptop is not in use?

What safety features shall i put in place, i heard recently that you can get into a wireless network pretty easy with the right software.

And will i need to port forwad and stuff when downloading and general use?

If you have cable make sure you get a cable router not a stadard ADSL router and modem. Assuming you just get an ethernet cable from NTL then you just stick that in the WAN port on the back and away you go.

I would recommend NEtgear cable routers as very good, cant remember part number off hand. THis has 4 ethernet ports so you can have up to 4 devices connected via cable

Modern cable routers include NAT translation and a firewall so lots of security. Wouldnt hurt to run ZoneAlarm free firewall on every PC though ( www.download.com )

You want to limit her speed ? Well make sure you set the wireless to only work in B mode. This is a max of 11mbps, but in reality you only get about 3 or 4 meg. So if you have a 10meg connection the most she can do is 50% of your bandwidth :-) sneaky or what !
