A file with the name "win2k_xp1425" has appeared on my desktop. A quick properties check shows that the 8meg file is an application - Package 29435.
Anyone have any ideas what the hell this is? It has literally just appeared on the desktop as I restarted my computer. I always get a bit panicky deleting or clicking on something that I don't recognise.

New one on me. Although it sounds rather like a driver package; about the right size and they're often labelled "win2k_xp".
Delete it, then start asking anyone else who uses the computer what they've been up to.
If it keeps coming back then the usual spyware advice applies, but it does honestly sound like a driver.
