when I open a jpeg it does it as a download, then I have to 'open' the download to view it, then go back into the download folder to delete it.

This has only just started happening, and IT IS BUGGING THE F*CK OUT OF ME

I'd be most grateful for any advice from the PH massive

I assume you are talking about jpg's that you have on your computer already?
It sounds like somehow the settings have changed which decides which app a pict file is opened in. That being the case, right click in a pict file and select "Get Info" then go down to where you see "Open With" and decide what app you'd prefer the pict to be opened/viewed with. Which i would guess would be "Preview" if so, then select that. Under there, there is a button marked "Change all" pressing that will ensure all files on that file type will be opened with the same application, and not just that single file.

PJR's idea sounds like a prime suspect.

Another possibility is that you are using a modifier key when clicking on links (thumbnails, or text hyperlinks) in your browser. The correct protocol is:
Apple-click: Opens the link in a new window or tab
Alt-click: Downloads the link to your nominated download folder
which I think is the reverse of Windows. So perhaps your thumb is reaching for the wrong key, which I've done before?

If it's neither of these, we'll need more information.
