Palm OS to Windows Mobile
Discussion
I have been working with various Sony Clie and Palm OS. I now realise that Palm OS is the new Betamax.
My Clie is on its last leggs and I need to replace it as soon as possible. Is there any conversion method/software that could allow me to convert my Palm diary and adress book into MIcrosoft Mobile or similar?
Thanks

Should work. I'd uninstall the Palm software before putting on ActiveStink though the two will probably not enjoy each others company.
If you don't have Outlook, often a Windows Mobile device will come with it on a CD.

Sorry Nathan, how do I sync with Outlook? My Clie doesn't seem to give me a choice. It automatically goes to Palm Desk top and I can't see any options that could change it.
Their should be an option to "sync contacts with outlook" burried in there somewhere. Hopefully. As you say it is the Betamax of the world... Sony might not have coughed up for the bit of code that lets you do this :S
Am I reading things correctly? Palm OS the new Betamax?
The current Palm v5 is so superior to the MS OS its frightning. I've used Palm for around 3 years, then I've had a Windows Smartphone for the last year. The battery life is rubbish because the OS is too thirsty for power, and none of the programs compare with the same things for Palm, even the Documents to Go versions of Word and Excel for Palm function better than the cut down Excel and Word equivalent. Then Windows crashes every month for no particular reason.
In a recent poll of users in both the US and here, Palm was by far the more popular Operating System. The only downside is that with Sony moving out of the PDA market outside of Japan (they have released a new Palm based PDA in the last 2 months purely for Japan), there are less Palm based PDA's than Windows systems, and Palm have just done a Windows based Smartphone purely for the people who can't think beyond Microsoft.
I've fallen out so much with Windows that I'm converting my PC systems to Linux.
If you really want to be a sheep and throw money at Microsoft then to sync to Outlook you'll need the original CD that you get with the PDA as the program install has an option to either sync with Outlook or the Palm Desktop. I presume you chose the Palm option. Just do a reinstall and sync with Outlook.

Yep you read it right. Whilst I'd agree that Palm OS is a much more elegant solution, it isn't the first or last 'thing' to be slaughtered by the 800lb gorilla that is Microsoft.
I picked myself up an old Psion 5, so I could tap away on the train, even that compared to Windows CE / Pocket Edition is vastly superior and gets the job done quite nicely.
The problem is also that business users don't want "Palm Word" or "eWord" they want "Word" and "Excel" even if the functionality is greatly reduced simply because it is Word and Excel.
This was the survey I mentioned.

If Palm was the dinosaur, I couldn't see it been the most popular Operating System in the US? I hope it will be around for a long time.
Impressed that you purchased a Psion Series 5, its a real shame they didn't update them. I had the Series 3 a number of years ago. Psion are still listed on the FTSE, but I have no idea what they are doing now.

I'm not saying Palm is a dinosaur or out of date... just that... well... Microsoft crush everything before them. Just in general wandering around offices I've seen more Pocket PC devices (phones, PDA) than I have Palm, which is kind of a shame as just once I'd like the underdog to win
It was a no brainer purchase for me really, £40, 20hrs battery life, proper keyboard. As all I ever write is ASCII text in vast quantities so long as the sync system can convert from whatever to .txt I'm happy
They left the PDA arena (again a shame, EPOC32 is pretty good, even on an old series 5 ) and seem to be producing industrial equipment; those little pad's that UPS and co run around with? They're Psion's.

Hear, hear. I'm still using my Psion 5MX after umpteen years because all the PDAs I've tried in the meanwhile have been pieces of junk by comparison.

Well, I was going to say that they own Symbian, the O/S that Nokia use on their phones, but it appears they didn't own it (31%) and that they sold their share to Nokia in 2004 (for £135M). So I've no idea what they're up to, either...
