Usually its silent at idle, but all day today the drive has been going nuts. It is as busy as hell doing summat, and only goes quiet very occassionally.

I have no applications open, the usual 49 or so processes running, and I have pulled the plug on it to the outside world.

But still it sits there for hours on end going absolutely nuts.

If I check task manager even when it is quiet CPU usage is 100%.

Any ideas?

I have run all sorts of crap cleaner and virus scans, all clear.

It has taken me ages to be given some time by mt PC to open my browser to post this up too, and when I close the browser, that takes an age too and it closes it down slowly line by line and clears my desktop icons line by line too. Then it slowly comes back up.

What process is making up the most of the activity?

As far as CPU usage is concerned, system idle process, 85-95%.

Do you have Windows Defender plus another anti-spyware program that prevents stuff from getting on in the first place, eg. SPyware Blaster?
My crystal ball says it's msmpeng.exe taking up all the CPU...

Open up your process list and either put a screenshot of it on here for people to check or have a look at this site for rogue processes, check everyone running - www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_a.htm

Is anything other than system idle process using up lots of CPU processing power in your task manager?

start>
run>

might not help, but provide further humour on the hat front
for us later

Were you or had you just done anything like installing a application/driver/windows update etc

Do you visit many porn sites silly

Ok, that can be safely ignored. That shows how idle your system is... in this case... very. On par with me in fact

As Lee said, anything new installed, updates, A/V programs, etc.

Is the system sluggish?

do what passenger say's... open task manager and click CPU header and it will order by what process is using the most most usualy system Idle process is using 95-99% which is fine if it's anything else then just say.

Also try starting the system and safemode and see if it still does the same thing?

Safemode: turn off PC > turn on > start tapping F8 > if you get boot menu select HDD, harddrive, IDE0 or relivent association with your main harddrive > select safemode and login

If it works fine in safemode then: Click start > click run > type 'msconfig' > click services [tab] > put a tick in Hide microsoft services > click disable all > click startup [tab] click disable all > OK > restart computer and see if this has resolved the issue.

If the above solves it then matter of trial and error adding half ticks in at a time to see what is causing the issue.

EDIT: also could always try a trusty system restore? start > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore

Liam

Cant see anything like msmpeng.exe.

Er...how...er...do I do a screen shot? It wont let me cut & paste processes?

Bear with me, its taking ages to get a word in edgeways to post.

Thanks.

I see we have another Opera fan in the mist...

I used to use the weather channels satellite picture update as part of a daily forecast on my old company's intranet.

They are nice in the fact when a new image is hosted it keeps the same name so we always had the latest copy on the site.

Just closed a process called mclogsvr.exe (I think) and its stopped going nuts.

Gonna reboot and get it back up, then screen shot.

Thanks for the help.
