I used ActiveSync in the past, and been able to backup my Orange M500 no problems.

Since getting an M600, and a new laptop - I've found that there is no backup option in the Tools menu.

Am I doing something silly? Version 4.2.0 on XP pro if it makes any difference...

Is that phone a WM5 device? I have a MDA Vario II (WM5) and I don't have that option either. I believe the backup option has been removed for WM5 devices.

from activesync 4.2.0 help

Note Backing up and restoring information is available only for Windows Mobile software for Smartphone 2003 and earlier and Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC 2003 and earlier.

Manually back up information if your device does not have a synchronization relationship with a PC or before you clear memory on your device.

On the Tools menu, click Backup/Restore, and then click the Backup tab.
Do one of the following:
To back up all information, select Full backup.
To back up only new and changed information, select Incremental backup.
Click Back Up Now.
