I have a Netgear DG834PN router and a USB wireless adapter. I have a PC and an iMac connected to theis ruter with ethernet. I need to keep my PC hard wired to the router for security reasons (so can't use the USB adapter as that's for PC only) so now want to move the iMac to a new room and connect to the router wirelssly. What wireless adapter would I need that would allow the iMac to connect to the Netgear router?

Thanks!

And should appear up on the menu bar at the top, looks like 3 or 4 bars semi circular, pointing up. Over on the right.

Click it and a little menu will drop down allowing you to configure it.

Good news, but if it worked straight away without any configuration needed on the iMac, then I'd guess your wireless connection isn't secure.

Probably not a big deal, but have a read through this thread for some tips.

Thanks. I'll look into this. I think the reason it knew is that i had been hard wired to the router and just took those details and used wireless. Does that make sense?

No, doesn't work like that.

OS X looks for connections in a series of priorities, ie ethernet, then wireless... It'll switch between them automatically.

For it to join your network automatically means it's not encrypted.

Not really

Your Netgear router will (likely) have four network ports on it, and anyone physically connecting to one of those ports will have access to your network. Obviously, because the router is inside your house you have control over who can plug into one of those ports, so there's not really any need for additional security when you're using a wired network.

When you start using a wireless network, you're effectively presenting an unlimited number of network ports that anyone within range can connect to, so you need to enforce either WEP or preferably WPA security to stop them.
