OK, trying to avoid buying a new PC, I thought I would buy a new hard drive, swap it out, reinstall a fresh XP, and then mount the old one as a slave, copy useful data off it, and then have double the storage.

My old drive is a 80G IBM (ic35l080avva07.0) (In a Dell). Any ideas what is a good alternative to this drive, or am I stuck replacing like for like?

Damn, a Deathstar 120Gb... had one of those until it got loud and annoying.

You'll have a hard time replacing it for like... IBM don't make HDD's anymore! They sold the whole lot to Hitatchi a while back. But anyway, if you are keeping that computer you will be looking for a PATA drive which goes up to 300Gb (generally speaking).

I think Seagate are reasonably good these days.

Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor - they're much of a muchness for home use.

Buy the one with the size and interface (SATA/PATA) that fits your pocket.

I'd avoid Maxtor... the only drives I've seen fail in the last three years...

I have had my Maxtor 200gb in my Shuttle ofr over 3 years and works fine. All much of a muchness really, as someone said before size and budget to suit really.

I look after 4000 PCs... we have a mixture of Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung.

In my experience, over the last three years, the only drives that have failed in service have been Maxtor drives (around 100 failures in that period).

I'd echo the thoughts about maxtor faliures & seagate being OK. The 7200.9's I think are available in PATA and are quiet, fast & reliable IME.

I bow to your superior knowledge oh wise one. I was only giving my opinion in that not everything fails etc. I am not going to get into a flame war and say that I manage 4001 pc's

Suffice to say, lots of drives can fail for different reasons etc.

Anyway mine is bigger than yours

I agree with you guys on both issues. I would say though that I had Western Digital drives fail as well as Maxtor. Seagate go no and on and on and on.... The reasons for our failures were running most of the time at high temps so if your running in a hot environment go Seagate all the way!

I know and my Griff 500 was the only car i couldn't break and believe me i gave it some abuse

Apart from 5th gear going (which is a more common problem than i thought) it was my fav TVR of all time.

Had Jap cars, VW's and a seriously modded mini and i broke something mechanical on all of them.

Anyway, I don't do PC's only Macs: Discuss

Can I have my thread back, or haven't you finished with it yet?

Now to really muddy the waters. If I have the ATA disk, will the SATA/PATA disks fit in, or do I need to worry about the disk controller and cables too?

I know surprised me too. Must have got a reall good'un.

The japmobiles were a toyota supra (old school) and a Nissan GTiR (pocket rocket)

The Trev left me stranded once, when the main 100amp fuse went. That was because I had jump started my mates griff 500 and it blew fuse and I never knew.

Pretty sure PATA is ATA - before SATA existed, it was just called ATA because there was no need to differentiate it.

A PATA drive should be a direct replacement, but a SATA drive wouldn't be.

Thanks for all your help, folks. Just bought a 250G Samsung and installed XP again. Working well, although had a mare because I had to remember where I have left my CDROM drive, as the DVDRom would not read the XP install disk.

(Thank f*** I had another PC to trawle for help!)

Had exactly the same problem with a Maxtor drive swapped for a Samsung 250Gb, even with the Maxtor as a slave wouldn't work. Now running 2x250Gb Samsung, with a Seagate external as an essentials back up.
