Im a fan of Microsoft, at least I used to be. I've still got an open mind, but today I knew I'd had enough when WMP11 thrust itself upon my computer (giving me virtually no choice).

I'm beginning to think along the lines of $hit Torrent.

IE 7 was pants, and now WMP11 is significantly worse than WMP10. I remember concluding that WMP10 was only barely tolerable.

Tomorrow I shall be using Firefox and Winamp. In fact, it's already. I doubt anyone really cares about my preferences, but does anyone know what's happened?

I don't think my tastes have changed significantly, I'm not overly critical, it just seems to me that MS software is going down.... Fast.

How did WMP 11 get onto your machine? It's only available from Windows Update as an Optional component confused which means you must have chosen to install it

I'd been having problem with WMP10 so I installed WMP11, no change except the interface is completely different, the little option of making a video playlist that you can quickly add to by dragging and dropping whilst still have the video screen visible has disappeared.

You're right that you can download it from microsoft.com, but what Baconbonce is saying is that if you go to Windows Update, it's an optional download. So it wouldn't have automatically got downloaded, the OP must have selected it.

Actually it comes bundled with IE7 so rides along as a Critical. I have installed no optional updates and have I7 + WMP11.

Nah, doesn't come bundled with IE7 - both are listed separately on Windows Update - IE7 is down as a critical (for some weird MS reason) and WMP11 is listed under optional.

Just done a Windows Update here to double check

Then that's very odd and suspicious. As, like I said, I've been lumbered with WMP11 and IE7... but haven't actually downloaded WMP11, nobody else has used my laptop other than me.

Besides which given the choice I'd not have snagged WMP11 anyway as I use VLC for everything and I find WMP's new interface to be totally fugly.

I don't know about optional. WMP10 told me there was an update, and given that it would only ask me again, I elected to accept. Turns out that the WMP10 udate is WMP11. I suppose I did have a choice, but it's not much of a choice TBH..... Accept or be pestered until you accept.

Had WMP11 been tolerable, I might have put up with it.

Even the visual bugs in the title bar didn't bother me. The really basic problem I had with it was that it's blooming black. I guess that's great if you only ever look at dark windows. I spend most of my time looking at light/white windows, with black text. If you do that for any period of time and you have a CRT monitor, you want to turn the brightness down, in order that you don't get a headache.

Unfortunately because WMP11 is black, you cant see anything of it unless you turn the brightness up. You can still change the colour of the player, but you only have control over the tint. I call that a basic fault.

Needless to say, why I would want a media player that look like a wingmirror I'll never know. I used not to use that option. Now I don't use the player. The End.

Again odd, perhaps Microsoft have changed it? Or it was released as a critical by mistake and withdrawn?

It doesn't show up if you do the Express option in Windows update as this only checks critical updates.

Do the Custom option instead and it shows up under the optional software listing

scratchchin That's odd. I've always through that the utility built in to Windows is for Critical updates only; as a lot of optional stuff never shows up in it (i.e. the XP Burning engine update) regardless.

I think either way Microsoft are being VERY sneaky and underhanded with WMP11 as it most certainly isn't an optional in my book (do it or I bug you for ever in WMP10, oddbod behaviour from the Winupdate utility).

MS just sent me IE7 automatically but based on comments here I have not installed it and hopefully, by choosing Custom Install and unticking the box, it won't get in.
