Been using them for years, no problems.

Then, out of the blue, I get a security centre upgrade, which I download, and then, after years of perfectly good service, it all goes to pot.

1st off, on old security centre, click the logo, instant opening. Now it has some annoying magnifying glass image that goes from icon to icon and takes ages and ages to load.

CPU usage goes through the roof, almost killing my PC. Through this forum and McAfee forums, I find the problem and fix it myself.

Now my DAT signature files are out of date and wont update, so find a fix on the McAfee website, but it doesnt work.

OK, I will reinstall, but it wont let me reinstall, just tells me I have a later version and stops dead at that. OK thinks I, I will uninstall, then reinstall the old version paid for on my account.

Only now, their website is up the swanny and it wont let me download and reinstall and I cant get their support page up either.

How can a company that has been so good for so long for me, no issues at least, then introduce a newer version of my product, which ends up causing so much bloody grief.

I'm off to Norton, unless anyone has any other recommendations?

Ta.

Norton is worse.

Mcafee has a massive cpu overhead and always has done, on performance they cannot compete with some of the other vendors. Sophos is brilliant at anti virus and far, far faster but doesn't do some of the other security things that McAfee does.

I totaly agree! McAfee has always beena resource hog then again so is NIS but NIs is a absolute pain i have spoken to hundreds of domestic computer users who have uninstalled NIS and been left with it still running but totaly denying access to the internet! having to use symnrt to remove it off the system.

Sophos is good specialy corporate setups nice backup update facilitys so then if main server is down it will update off Sophos website and so on. saying that Norton corporate is also a good AV and McAfee corporate isn't too bad either especialy the latest version.

So basicaly almost any home AV is a resource hog and a pain in the ass!

I use Avast atm but just set up my SBS serve ron vmware on my Linux server so see if i decide to borow a backup of sophos corporate just incase someone looses theirs

I just got a loverly new Sony Vaio this week - not a shrinking violet either with a Core 2 Duo and 2 GB of DDR2 RAM. I was however very disappointed with the performance - it all seemed very slow. I was even getting frustrated whilst getting used to using its mousepad. It kinda did not keep up with where I was wagging my finger.

The PC came preloaded with a 90 day trial version of Norton Internet Security 2006 and Ghost 10. The 2nd time I switched the laptop on, I got a message that the Ghost subscription had expired!!!

So, the decision was made after 5 days of this nonsense to uninstall all the Norton products, and clean off any trace references to them in the registry using the excellent and free CCleaner. I then loaded on Avast Antivirus home edition (also free) - and what do you know? - I have a very respectable fast laptop now.

Norton really is a resource hog. It is as if the raison d'etre of the laptop is to drive that piece of software first, then run Windows and Office etc second and third to that. I would hate to shell out on it. Infact, I am glad in a way that they install a free trial of it on so many new PCs. In that way, you can tell that it is indeed crapper than a crap thing without the pain of being parted from your cash. Grrrrr.

Well, after several chat sessions, all afternoon and all evening, I have achieved a small victory. They even rang me from India to talk me through the problems that couldnt be resolved through the chat sessions.

I have been sent various removal tools, to remove all traces of the previous products, as this is thought to be hampering the reinstallation of the products.

Done everything they have suggested, spent far to many hours on it.

Result being I have finally managed to reinstall my firewall, and it even works.

But Virus Scan installation still fails every time.

I reckon all of this is down to their 'upgrade' which is a complete total utter pile of poo.

Will probably be spending all day Sunday talking to them to download the older version of virus scan and security centre, which is what i've been trying to do today. Still, at least i've now got the older firewall version back.

Norton, McAfee, Symantec. They used to be the three names that would garantee quality virus or system utilities.

Now they're the three that you really need to avoid / uninstall ASAP. Instead, get Avast!, nod32, AVG or just run periodic scans with Trend HouseCall on-line.

I'd give up on them I'm afraid, blitz as much as you can and then either FFR the system with the XP CD (assuming it doesn't do the pre-load software as well) or just give up until that inevitable time; it may be months or years away, when XP needs to be reinstalled and your finally totally free of the codswallop that is McAfee.

I use AVG Free Edition. Works great. My computer is new and came with McAfee installed. I uninstalled all traces of McAfee and Norton will never get anywhere near my computer.

Network Associates, innit? Everything they do is junk. They buy up products, mine the license fees for a few years, close down the support, sack the developers and allow the products to waste away until no-one's interested, then demise them. I've seen them do this over and over again. The minute a product's bought by NA, you may as well start looking for a replacement, because you're going to have to do it in time anyway.

I won't willingly give NA a penny.

McAfee ditched completely, shame i've wasted the seven months remaining of my sub.

I will be taking the time to write to them, explaining my complete satisfaction over the last few years, but not the last few months. Whoever developed that 'upgrade' wants shooting.

Checking out the alternatives now, thanks folks.
