Active Desktop - icons disappearing

Chaps,

Mk desktop machine has been playing up something rotten recently. Crashing repeatedly, refusing to start, a real pain in the neck. I haven't added anything new, so am confused ...

More specifically, the latest problem is that it refuses to show any icons on the desktop if active desktop is enabled. Disable active desktop - all the icons come back.

Any suggestions as to what to do? (As an aside, I have never understood active desktop and what it does, apart from the fact that it seems to need to be enabled to show any picture as a desktop image.)

All help appreciated.

Oh, it's a Shuttle box running an AMD Athlon 1100 chip with Win2K. Nothing unusual installed (and nothing new added recently apart from MS updates and AVG updates.)

Update - I've found that I managed to set 'Don't show desktop icons' by mistake - sorry to have bothered you ...

However, a serious question remains. What is 'Active Desktop' and what does it do?
