Help!
My 15 year old daughter is making my life hell! Her new (well 3 months old) HP laptop has started throwing a hissy fit almost everytime she uses windows media player. She has all her music on the thing so its the most important thing in her life!
When she selects a track to play it often refuses and a message box says that her computer has no sound device fitted (it has) or that the device is in use by another programme (it isn't)
The computer itself says the sound device is working properly. I've updated as much as I can! What do I do next?

Have you tried upgrading the media player? 11 is out now. Seems OK. I have it on a couple of machines. There's a chance that popping the new one on will sort it out.

Its a free download from Microsoft...

If ther's no sound driver, WinAmp won't be able to play the tracks either!

You're assuming the fault is with the driver, not the WMP detection of it.

Its entirely possible that some of the core of WMP is hosed, which a Winamp install would overcome.

WMP doesnt detect audio drivers, it uses direct show to render a "filter graph" (collection of codecs) one of them will be a directsound renderer which comes with directx. If wmp isn't finding sound, its because directx isn't and if directx doesn't then thats because you don't have a sound driver (or a working installation of dx, but thats unlikely).

I suggest that new soundcard drivers are downloaded and installed, and things should start to behave..

So if you used winamp with an output plugin other than directsound, presumably it would work and the advice remains sound.

Either route is an option.

Yeah, but then that would assume WMP is working in the first place, which it isn't, so no, it wouldn't work

Well, unless andy tries it, we probably wont know.

The no device error in WMP is documented in many areas, there is enormous amount of chat about it and reinstalling the driver will in certain cases work and in others it wont.

I've come up against it myself and using an alternate player I get sound without issue.

Neither of us really know what the fault is, so its an exercise in pointless postulation.

Well, I deleted WMP completely (or as best I could) and reloaded from scratch to WMP 10. Then I did all the various Windows critical updates for WMP but not the upgrade to 11 at this point and it started working fine.
(Note, there is a new critical update for WMP from MS that has only just been released this month)
Just upgraded to 11 and its still all working.
I had tried to do this before without success, but the difference last time was that I had gone straight to WMP11 and then done the updates as opposed to doing ten first, then the updates, then upgrade to 11.

Dunno if this helps anyone else?

Still hate bloody Microsoft though!

My sound has gone nuts on my pc too.

According to the system setting and drivers etc... Everything is setup to run through my usb speakers, VLC, WMP and iTunes all play fine through the usb speakers, yet the volume control on the taskbar plays through the pc speaker, all adjustments to the usb speaker controls get played through the pc speaker when in the properties dialog and outlook notification play through the pc speaker.

Weird, but not weird enough for me to try and fix.
