Greetings PH massive,

one for the networking gurus....

have established a WLAN comprising of 2 laptops - one running XP Pro, the other running XPMCE - a desktop, also running MCE and a wireless modem router. laptops both wireless, desktop is hard wired to router vai ethernet connection. great. fandabby dozzy... except.....

the problem is this guys..... one of the drives on the desktop (USB plug n play) is visible to all on the network, however, is inaccessible to everything on the network ie can't explore it or save to it.

the drive in question is selected for sharing on the network and all firewalls have been expressly configured to allow safe coms between all MAC addresses on the network. even tried it with all firewalls etc off and still the same error message....

\\Desktop\J is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

all computers currently set to administrator privilages and still message appears.

am i going to need to chuff about in the registery editor to increase a stack value or something equally hidious or am i just missing something glaringly obvious??

many thanks

wizzy

Simple, quick instructions.

On the machine with the USB drive. Pull up the share and set the permissions to everyone.
If this doesn't work then hmm... it could be the old "people with no password can not logon remotely" thing.

Anybody logging in to your XP pro computer to use any of it's resources must have a user account on your XP Pro system OR the guest account must be turned on. Have you checked those two items?

Personally, I find it easier to use an inexpensive NAS HD for small peer to peer type networks such as this. Buffalo LinkStation works very well.

And have a password.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Security > Local Security Policy > Security Options
Set these to 'Disable'
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only

if your going to use Guest to do this then got to User Rights Assignment and where it says "Deny access to this computer over the network" remove user Guest from the list.

yes

pro system is fine, can see other lap top and between the 2 of them can share all share enabled files between them. both lap tops can also see/browse and edit all shared drives, folders etc physically inside the desktop, just not the USB drive J.
