Yes to a Pace Box, I got my info for fitting from
www.morlocks.co.uk/disc-change-v2h
The suggested use of a 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 8MB Cache 7200rpm ATA100 Retail Hard Drive (Manufacturer's 5yr Warranty) @ £30.99(36.41) each. was I think from another web site which I cannot find at the moment.
The only thing is the cooling fan seems to run all the time now-this seems to be normal if you change to a larger hard disk.

I wouldn't go anywhere near a drive with Maxtor written on it.... huge (sometimes multiple) failure rates seen @ my last workplace.

If thats an old spec 5400rpm drive thats probably why its tricky to source, you dont have to use one of these i purchased a drive for a friend of mine for the same conversion (sky + upgrade)it was a 250 gig 7200rpm drive, boy can that drive store a lot of films, its still going strong after 12 months apx,it was recommended to use the slower drive due to heat build up in the sky + case, but thats not true he as suffered no heat build up lockups or whatever, hope this helps you.

I've had 2 maxtor drives fail on me, and your not the only other person i've heard say their crap. I'll never touch them again, Seagate and Western Digital seem to be the ones to go for.

Same here, every Maxtor I've had has died, a colleague whose in IT had similar experiences. Better to get a Seagate or Hitachi (used to be IBM Deskstar).

Personally. Hard drives ain't been the same since the days of Necropolis hehe
Seriously, I've got a Maxtor 300Gb HDD in the media machine and it's been golden for 2 years now.

Components fail. Statistically speaking, I've not seen a major difference between the big names when it comes to knackered drives that I've pulled out of machines (IBM/Hitatchi, Maxtor, Segate, WD, et al). If you get a good `un then you're laughing until the machine is scrapped.

What can, often, screw up peoples perception is the fact they buy in a batch of say Dell machines, which all have the exact same batch of Maxtor drives in them (possibly even sequential serial numbers)... that batch is bad... the whole lot go... the impression is Maxtor = cheapo bad stuff. As I said seen the same with all the big names.

Fair point, and I suspect that's what we saw but then I've NEVER seen a repeat issue with any other manufacturer....... You can only report what you see...

My two were from different sources, one in a Maxtor firewire drive, the other was in my iMac.

Not had a problem with with any hard drives failures, original supply, additional disks or externals - other than a Seagate external drive which they have kindly just swapped under warranty.

So be fair the problem with that one may have been my fault but I can't be sure. The enclosure worked but the disk did nothing. It had worked about 5 times until one day it didn't.

Two of the additional disks I have fitted over the years have been Maxtor. Both still running and I am very please with them. Maxtor is owned by Seagate these days so more than likely very similar component sources and maybe even out fo the same factory.

That said Samsung are doing some excellent, well priced and quiet drives these days. Could be worth a look.

I checked my disk, and it's only a 200Gb.

As above, i've never had any issues with Maxtor, we see plenty of IBM/Hitachis thrown in the bin at work though.
