Having just bought a new Dell inspiron e520, I wanted to fit my LG dvd recorder, but find that unlike the old Mesh PC that had IDE sockets to connect to, the Dell only has Sata connections.
I bought a converter here:
www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=24368098536&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3Jldmlld3M=&product_uid=106547

which fits the back of the dvd recorder and converts from IDE to Sata

but the dell machine won't recognise the presence of the DVD recorder - am I missing something as this is a bit new to me? the dvd has power as does the converter - well it lights up so assume power there!

is there another setting I need to change?

please help

Master / Slave / CS jumpers need playing with? Check the manual for the convertor and go in to the Dell BIOS (F2) and tell it to redetect it's drives... knowing Dell it's not set to autodetect every socket fitted so it boots quicker.

Thanks for your suggestions

have tried jumpers as master and c/s - no good - there is no manual with the convertor but comments on ebuyer from other people who bought it seem to vary from works perfectly to can't get it to work.

have been into the bios and messed with settings but still it won't detect the drive

just about ready to give up

I would suggest buying a IDE/SATA -> USB2 converter from maplins (or elsewhere) - cost about £20... and works flawlessly.

How many SATA connections on the mobo do you have? Is there just 1 HDD? What other drives are there?

Now i didnt think you could get SATA DVD drives but as usual I am wrong

www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/120689/rb/24390803148

£28.26 including VAT. That'll be about £10 more than the IDE but still cheaper than the USB option....

right

went to maplins again last night
they suggested as there are no IDE ports on mobo, using a card in the pci slot to give me a couple of IDE ports the dvd will connect ide to ide

bought the card for just under £20 - it works!

only thing now is the boot up has slowed down while the dell machine ' scans IDE ports '

thanks for your help
