Need an external mouse, so a couple of dumbass questions again...

1) Anyone experience with the new apple mighty mouse...? Looks a bit gimmicky to me and i'm not really that impressed. Any reason why i should buy it over a microsft one (which i like the shape of etc)

2) There are lots of "wireless" mice around that need a USB infrared actuator. My MBP is the earlier type with only 2 USB ports so naturally i don't want to use one of those ports for the external mouse. Will an infrared wireless mouse work through the MBP's own infrared/wireless set up?

3) Benefits of a bluetooth one, when i don't use bluetooth for anything else..?

Cheers... ~PHIL

Sorry for so many stupid computer questions lately - i'm really out of touch!

1: I have a wireless mighty mouse, tracking is excellent, battery life is great (5mths daily use on the original batteries), however some of my chums report the right click doesnt always work for them, yet has been fine for me.

2: Most wireless mice use RF not IR. I have a logitech media play mult
i button wireless mouse that works fine out of the box, but a cheap shareware app called Steermouse http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/ allows me to use all the buttons for app specific settings. Still uses up a USB port though.

3: Bluetooth mouse - more USB ports free and no 'dongle' to forget/break off....

Thanks - what is the wireless network that airport uses (RF i suppose..?)..? Could that power a mouse too..? Just wondering as i will be using the wireless network anyway by the end of the month.

I've got the wireless mighty mouse and find it a joy to use.

Like you I've got a MBP with 2 USB ports adn the biggest advantage is it uses bluetooth.

AFAIK all RF mice use the 2.4ghz spectrum and need their own proprietry dongle. WLAN is completely different and isn't used for controlling mice.

I don't know what drivers the MS mice comes with but it is likely you will only be able to use the basic functions on it i.e left/right click and scroll. You won't be able to do things like open dashboard with the mouse unless MS have written a driver or there is a 3rd party patch available.

Most wireless LANs do in fact use the 2.4GHz spectrum, but mice & WLANs tend to play nice due to the vast difference in transmit power.
