in the Phoenix style BIOS?

Also why does a computer turn itself on if it's not connected to a LAN or Broadband link?

thanks

s3 is a deeper sleep state in suspend mode than s1. In s3 the machine will typically be silent, the cpu and psu fans will stop etc. In s1 they usually keep going. s3 can cause more problems than s1 though in terms of the machine not resuming properly.

Could be loads of options to turn it's self on, confusingly most are worded differenty in different bios's. Look for things like power on by keypress, wake on modem ring/modem settings, power on/off/resume on ac-on, some even have a timer to turn on at a certain time. you just need to check all the bios options thoroughly.

Thanks for that.
This computer though doesn't go into sleep and then come on by itself, sorry i should have made myself a bit clearer. The omputer is powered down and then for some reason it will turn it self back on, not straight away, but at random times. I've looked all the way though the BIOS and i can't see anything apart from the S! and S3. Will look into this a bit more, thanks

Check the Wake on LAN and also Wake from PS2 settings.
There might also be a setting for behaivior of the power switch (power on/off or suspend).

The Suspend settings can cause odd behavior. For example; I know that if you have S3 enabled and resurme/ wake from PS2 enabled if you turn you PC off at the mains, when you turn the mains on again the PC will detect the keyboard and take that as a sign to turn on the PC.

Personally I really like S3 (suspend to RAM) as I beleive the system actually uses less power in this mode than when it's off (the spec is something like less then 5W in S3)

Yes that's what I understood, I'd have a check to see if anything that sounds like any of the bios options I mentioned is there. Also does the switch on the front of the PC operate cleanly with no stickiness?
