I've spent most of my morning trying to sort out the damage done by Microsoft following an automatic update last night. I've been fortunate enough to receive a Windows firewall, which has astutely ensured that nothing will pass. This includes Outlook, my mobile phone router and even MSN Messenger. There is provision to add software to an exceptions list, but when you click the list to populate this none of these things are listed. I spent about half an hour on the phone to Microsoft (no doubt at 50p per minute) and even they couldn't offer any assistance. In desperation I have now switched off my nice new firewall - and keep getting messages every few minutes informing me of drastic consequences. Very bloody annoying.

Start>Control Panel>Security Centre

On the left hand side there is a hyperlink entitled 'Change the way Security Centre alerts me'

Uncheck firewall.
