PSP Network Connections

I'm probably being a complete numpty here, so don't be afraid to tell me!
I'm trying to connect a PSP to a network using a Netgear DG834G and Windows XP, also have Norton Internet Security (and tried turning that off temporarily). I've tried all the advice on all the websites I've searched for, but still haven't got past the PSP timing out while it can't find the connection.
Who can point me in the right direction, probably to a site which is easy for the hard of understanding??
