Morning,

As above! Does anyone know how long XP Home will be supported for security / critical updates?

I've read the Microsoft policy, but it didn't help me

Thanks!

It'll still be supported for years yet I suspect, especially if Windows 98 was anything to go by.

Microsoft have said they will continue to provide security patches for Windows 2000 until 2010. One assumes then that security patches for XP will be available for a while longer than that.

Maybe, but they have withdrawn support for Windows Defender for W2K.

I wonder what else they won't botrher with for W2K?

According to my Windows sysadmin mate, support for XP will continue until 2011. (Don't shoot the messenger, I have no idea if he's right or not! He usually seems to be about SmallNFloppy stuff, though.)

I never used it myself but as I recall Windows Defender never came out of beta, and so was never a supported product in the first place. This isn't the same as support for an OS or security updates for other products that did get a full release.

Sounds about right. Microsoft have a few levels of support. You have the place where W2K and XP are now (security, critical, optionsls, voice support, etc.) after that they move to an extended support policy where everything is on-line and after that goes to end of life type support where it's security updates only. After that nada.

So yeah, by 2011 I'd expect XP to be EOL'd, but to enter its twilight phase late 07 - early 08.

To be honest, just because MS have killed off support for a product doesn't mean you can't keep using it; I'm pretty sure all the people STILL using Win98, NT4 and such would be a trifle upset if MS revoked their licenses and sent the heavy mob round... more than one 'company' using that software has big guns... litterally

I was of the belief that the standard support for a MS OS was 10 years

Well, IMNHO, the standard support for an MS OS is zero. Nil. Nada. MS doesn't GAS about you and me.
